Acts 9:26 - 30
26 When he came to Jerusalem, he tried to join the disciples, but they were all afraid of him, not believing that he really was a disciple. 27 But Barnabas took him and brought him to the apostles. He told them how Saul on his journey had seen the Lord and that the Lord had spoken to him, and how in Damascus he had preached fearlessly in the name of Jesus. 28 So Saul stayed with them and moved about freely in Jerusalem, speaking boldly in the name of the Lord. 29 He talked and debated with the Hellenistic Jews, but they tried to kill him. 30 When the believers learned of this, they took him down to Caesarea and sent him off to Tarsus.

New International Version (NIV)
Who vouches for you? Years ago, as I began my work on a degree, one of my professors came to me and said, “At this point in your academic career, as you begin your doctoral work, you need an advocate. I will be that advocate.” His advocacy gave me opportunities I never would have had on my own.

Saul was on his own when he arrived in Jerusalem. After his harrowing escape from Damascus, he might have thought the Christians in Jerusalem would welcome him. He tried to join the believers, but they were afraid of him because they did not believe he was a disciple. This might have been the end of his ministry before it began. But Saul had an advocate.

Barnabas brought Saul to the apostles and vouched for him. He told them of Saul’s conversion and his bold proclamation of Jesus. With Barnabas’s introduction, Saul was set free to preach boldly in the name of the Lord. Saul preached so fearlessly and freely that he found his life in danger again. Once again, believers in Jesus rescued him and sent him home to Tarsus.

At this point in our lives, we need an advocate. We have one in the Holy Spirit. He vouches for us. How does he do it? Often, the Spirit advocates for us through the voices of God’s people. Filled with the Advocate, Barnabas became an advocate for Saul. As the Spirit fills us we can become advocates of others, as well. We get by with a little help from our friends!

Pray with me:
Father, we thank you for Jesus, our Advocate with you, and for the Holy Spirit who comes alongside us in this life. Thank you to the people who have reminded us of our election in Christ. Show us someone we may encourage today. Grant us the privilege of advocating for your people, today, we pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.
Our Monday through Friday devotionals will start in the book of Acts this year.  We will not hurry through the book.  We want to see what the Holy Spirit did in the early church so that we may discern what he is doing in us and through us.  Join us for these devotionals as we learn together about our King and his Kingdom in the world.

We also invite you to join us as we read through the Bible. Copies of the reading plan are available at Tallowood Baptist Church, or download your copy here:
