We dedicated seven babies on Sunday. More are on the way. At one of our young adult Christmas gatherings, I walked in the door to see a baby, greeted two of our ladies who are expecting babies, and then found out a baby had been born that day. Remembering the joy of our own kids and grandkids, I had to smile. So much joy.
When Elizabeth gave birth to John, neighbors and relatives found out how God had blessed her with a child. They saw this as a miracle later in her life and they came to share her joy. At the circumcision on the eighth day, Elizabeth called the baby John. The crowd protested (what makes us think we get to name other people’s babies?). Finally, Zechariah, spiritually speechless for the pregnancy wrote the boy’s name and then found his voice confirming again the baby would be named John. Everyone wondered what God had in store for the child.
I know the feeling. Do you? Every time I see the gift of a child, I wonder what God might do with their lives. I know it will be good, because God is good. Each child born in this world Is God’s affirmation that life should go on. We weep with those who lose children. Our pain knows no bounds. But when the miracle necessary to create life actually takes place, shouldn’t we rejoice?
On this second day of Christmas, we rejoice in the gift of God’s Son, two thousand years ago. “Who then is this child going to be?” Savior and Lord. This child is born to us bringing good news of great joy for all people. Is he your Savior? Your Lord? He is. His name is Jesus!
