Closer
May 18 - November 10, 2019

We're delighted to announce our next feature exhibition at the museum - as named by our audience - Closer!

Step into the enchanting world of the often overlooked in this unique joint exhibition from Julya Hajnoczky and Katrina Vera Wong.

Hajnoczky uses a high-resolution scanner to produce richly detailed still life photographs of natural specimens like moss, bones, feathers, and leaves, allowing the viewer an unusually close look at each organic object.

Using sections of pressed or dried plants, Wong makes flowers that bloom in dark places, and she calls them Frankenflora.

Yours to explore from May 18!

Included with museum admission or membership.
Nocturnal: Museum As Muse
Thursday, April 18 | 6:00 - 8:30pm

Join us for an evening with artist Catherine M. Stewart, creator of our feature exhibition Skin & Bones, as we celebrate the release of two new books based on her exhibits at the Beaty!

The Skin & Bones exhibition explores our complicated relationship with the animal world through photography, natural science and the applied art of fashion design, and runs until August 13th 2019.

Invoking Venus opened at the museum in 2013 and juxtaposed images of bird specimens from the Beaty alongside those of sumptuous fabrics to explore the role colour, patterning and adornment play in courtship and attraction.

For this very special Nocturnal, in partnership with Capture Photography Festival, Catherine will share her experiences as an artist working with natural history collections.

Copies of books based on the Skin & Bones and Invoking Venus exhibitions will be available for purchase throughout the evening.
Let us know on Facebook if you'll be coming!

Applications close April 8th

Do you have a love of natural history that you're bursting to share?

Or are you just a fan of hanging out in museums? We might be biased, but we certainly are!

A huge part of what makes the Beaty so wonderful is our incredible team of dedicated volunteers, and we'd love to meet more of you!

Not only do you get to experience the behind-the-scenes of how a museum works, but you'll have access to training evenings where you can dive even deeper into each of our collections.

But don't just listen to us - volunteer Zaynah Khan has shared her experience of a year volunteering at the Beaty.
Education and Outreach Volunteer applications are open until Monday April 8th.
