Commuter Spotlight
As the semester goes on, we realize that many commuters feel a disconnect with Miami’s campus. Many commuters want to feel involved and connected to the university, but may not know where to begin. This month, we’re highlighting Nathan Wall, a freshman commuter, and asked him to explain how he takes personal responsibility of his commuter experience here at Miami. We hope his advice will encourage you to join clubs, visit the Commuter Center, and have the courage to put yourself out there and make meaningful connections in order to have the best possible Miami commuter experience!

Nathan Wall

Hi! My name is Nathan Wall, I'm a freshman living in Hamilton. I was born in Cincinnati on December 25th, so Ohio has been home my entire life. Commuting to Miami helps me manage my money and enjoy some of the resources a campus has to offer.
So far, the biggest challenge I've faced was finding a place I belong. Fortunately, I've made great friendships with amazing people. Connecting with others who are in the same place as you is the most rewarding part about being a commuter.
Being a commuter has offered me unique opportunities to contribute to my Miami Experience. I know I was not the only one who felt disconnected, and so I started the Society of Commuting Students with a few friends. Today, we are merging with the awesome people in the Commuter Council so we can work together to improve everyone's commuter experience.
If you would like to take control of your commuter experience, or just meet other students, there are lots of options! Swing by the Commuter Center and say hi (Armstrong, room 2045), sign up for the Commuter Council or other clubs on the hub, or email me (wallna@miamioh.edu). I hope to meet all of you soon!
Join Commuter Council!
Commuter students at Miami University Oxford are certainly a minority group. Often times, commuters face challenges unique from residential students and find themselves feeling out of place. At a University where commuters are not always catered to, it is important for us to take personal responsibility for our educational experience and make sure that our voice is heard.

Why should I join?

Commuter Council is the student organization for commuting students on campus.
Our mission is to improve the Miami experience for all commuting and relocating students. We do this by planning programs for commuters and helping students resolve complaints in an efficient way. There are many benefits to joining commuter council including connecting with your peers and faculty and gaining leadership experience.

How can I join?

There are no formal requirements to join commuter council - simply connect with an officer or attend a meeting to get started. Because we are a student organization for commuting students, we understand the often hectic schedules of commuters. This means that we attempt to schedule all of our events and meetings in a way that is most convenient for you! Any student can be a member of the Council and participate in events.
For more information and to join, visit our page on the Hub.
Where to Eat on Campus

Eating on Campus

As commuters, you may be eating the majority of your meals in the comfort of your home or you may be packing a daily lunch. However, many of us are on campus for long hours or we have long breaks between classes. In these moments, Miami Dining can be a great option for you! Miami has thirteen delicious dining options spread all over campus and ALL of them are available to commuter students. Here are a few of your dining-options explained, so that you never go hungry!

Quick & Easy:

If you’re in need of a quick and easy meal or something to grab-and-go, a la carte options and markets are your best bet. Here’s a list of them:
  • King Cafe: This cafe is located in the basement of King Library (we love their smoothies!)
  • Market Street at McCracken: This market is the largest on campus and it’s located on Central Quad. Basically, it’s a mini grocery store.
  • Dividends: This popular lunch option is located in the Farmer School of Business. It offers sandwiches and salads.
  • Armstrong Student Center: Armstrong itself has seven places to eat! A personal favorite of mine is Pulley Diner (I love the Spicy Chicken Sandwich and Fries). Another essential is Emporium. It’s the perfect place to grab a snack and drink when you’re in a rush.

For a sit-down meal:

If you’ve got some time to kill, or you want to have a meal with friends, check out these hearty buffet locations which are all-you-care-to-eat!
  • Bell Tower: This buffet has a perfectly convenient location on Academic Quad. One of the most popular menu choices is the loaded potato bowl (soo good!).
  • Martin Dining Center: This brand new dining hall has lots of delicious options and it’s conveniently located near Millet Parking Lot!
  • Pacific Rim: The best asian stir fry on campus! Located at Maple Street Station.

Commuter Meal Plan

Did you know there is a meal plan option designed specifically for commuters and off-campus students? The Miami Express meal plan is a flexible option that allows you to pay up front to load your Miami ID with meal plan money. You can add between $100 - $3,000 depending on your needs, and you get a discount when you spend in the buffets. This option is available to all commuters and you can sign up at any point in the semester. Learn more about the plan at Dining Meal Plans.
