Smith Summer Hours
We’re happy to announce that during the summer terms, some of the food services in Smith will be open on a limited basis. This will be a test of whether the campus really wants year-round food service in the student union. So, if you do, please support our vendors this summer!

Jason Washington's daughter Kayla, at left, gestures to the mural of her father during the memorial ceremony in the second floor lounge of Smith.
Kayla Washington speaks during the unveiling ceremony of a memorial mural to her father, Jason Washington, who was killed in 2018 by campus police officers. Family, friends, supporters, students, staff and faculty attended the day-long "Beyond Bystander" symposium held by the Jason Washington Art Committee as part of the June 6 unveiling. The mural, by artist Kyra Watkins, is on permanent display in the second-floor lounge of Smith.
Building closing for electrical upgrade July 2 and 3
Please start making plans for a disruptive building closure the first week of July. Facilities and Property Management has discovered a needed repair in the Main Distribution Panel and will shut down the entire building during the work. This means that students, staff, faculty and those with extended or 24/7 access will not be able to enter during this period.

As of now, the plan is to close the building at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, July 2. It will be closed all of Wednesday, July 3. The building will be closed for the holiday on July 4, but, if the electrical work is finished, extended/24/7 access should work normally on the 4th.

Please make plans for your staff to operate remotely during this time. We’ll update the Smith community as this gets closer.

Visitors to SMITH 258 look over some of the plans created for the Place Matters competition.
Entries in PSU Sustainability's Place Matters Design Competition are on display from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. today and Monday, June 10, in SMITH 258 (behind the study lounge). Also, look for them on nice afternoons in the Montgomery block. This competition offers people-friendly ideas for upgrading the campus’ public spaces. Feedback is being sought on the three plans during the exhibit period. Finalists’ presentations will take place June 13 in SMITH 327.
Pop-Up Library in Smith 026 open during summer: As many of you are aware, the Millar Library staff is operating a “pop-up” circulation desk in SMITH 026. The pop-up will remain available to all during the summer until the Millar building reopens. While staffing might necessitate the need for some adjustments, they hope to keep the pop-up open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and noon to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Study space is still available in SMITH 026 — but only during library hours. You need a PSU ID to enter.

Update: Early stages of Smith's critical maintenance work underway

In fall 2021, Smith Management began collaborating with the Student Fee Committee on a request for state bonds that would pay for repairs to critical maintenance systems in the building. This resulted in an $8.1 million bond to fund repairs or upgrade certain key systems, some more than 60 years old.
Why? Besides frequent breakdowns, available personnel who can maintain these aging systems might be in short supply or often the systems require expensive replacement parts fabricated by hand as they are no longer commercially available. Most heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems (HVAC) in Smith lack computerized monitoring that allows for more control over room temperatures. Issues with the elevators — well, we all know of those. These critical components of Smith must be replaced before portions of the building become unusable.
Campus Planning and Smith Management are currently securing bids and selecting contractors to do the work. The tentative plan is:
– Once contractors are onboard, final plans and a specific timeline for work will be created by spring 2025.
– Elevator and HVAC work should begin in April 2025. It is projected to take up to one year.
— During the work period, HVAC in certain areas of the building will be offline. Perhaps for several months. At this stage, it appears one system at a time can be worked on so that the rest of the building will have full HVAC. Those with work spaces in the affected offline areas will be offered temporary space elsewhere in Smith or in neighboring buildings.
— Elevators might be offline for several weeks. Things won’t be certain until the contractor is onboard, but the current plan is for only one elevator to be offline at a time. Some areas in the building might be taken offline during these repairs if alternative access cannot be coordinated.
This is all still early days and more information will be coming in the fall, but if you have immediated questions, send them to Randy Mishler, Smith's communications coordinator, at rmishler@pdx.edu.
Attendees at the annual SALP awards watch a lasso twirling demonstration in the Smith ballroom.
Student Activities and Leadership Programs held their annual "SALPies" this week in the Smith ballroom. The rodeo-themed evening celebrated student leaders and organizations and the work they contributed to the campus community this year. Awards were presented, food was served and entertainment was entertaining. No cattle were harmed in the making of this event.
