Dear Silver Faculty and Staff,
As we welcome the renewal and growth possibilities of spring, we acknowledge that these are times of uncertainty. While this context may impact our daily lives, our focus remains on fostering a supportive and inclusive teaching and learning environment within our academic community. We encourage you, our faculty and staff, to explore the array of Silver and University-wide resources available to promote student belonging and wellbeing.
By incorporating these supports, you can cultivate a space where our students feel seen, heard, and empowered to flourish. Emphasizing our shared commitment to social work values—mutual respect, care, and collective growth—enables us to build a vibrant Silver community that draws upon community care, no matter the challenge.
Below, you’ll find a selection of resources essential to guiding and referring students. Additionally, we encourage you to bookmark the following links for quick access to further support services, resources and referral information. If in the moment, you unsure where to refer your student, also consider utilizing the search bar [on the top right] of our school website - https://socialwork.nyu.edu.

Addressing Challenges Related to Affordability
- If a student reaches out to you in need of support regarding access to technology, food, or housing, please encourage them to complete the NYU Student Emergency Fund application and also encourage them to share their needs with us through the school’s Silver Emergency Resource Needs Notification Form. Silver’s form allows my office [Student Affairs Dean’s Team] to engage directly with the student and connect them to available resources and support.
Food Accessibility Resources
- Silver Shelf: A Basic Needs Resource Hub
Students’ one-stop shop at 1 Washington Square North Room G13 for food and grocery products, academic materials like DSMs, ASWB exam prep workbooks, and personal hygiene products. The Silver Shelf is open to Silver students during building hours (Monday - Friday, 8AM - 10PM). Questions? Email silver.shelf@nyu.edu! - Courtesy Meals: Available throughout the entire year, Courtesy Meals is a free, short-term, resource for students facing an unexpected financial emergency that prevents them from purchasing meals or groceries. Details can be found on the Courtesy Meal webpage.
- Swipe it Forward: Swipe it Forward is a NYU Student Government Assembly (SGA) program that enables meal plan members with unused meal swipes to donate them to fellow students. Each time a student donates, a voucher is placed in a bowl at the register, where students in need of a meal can then redeem them from a cashier upon check out. This program is donation-dependent and subject to availability.
- Value Packages: NYU Dining offers deals and value packages for students, which include $5 and $7 Deals at NYU dining retail locations. Special promotional deals are also available each week (check out the special offers on NYUEats.com).
- To learn more about these and more programs, please visit the Food Accessibility Assistance webpage and/or the NYU Student Basic Needs page.
Accommodations and Support for Religious Observances
- Students from certain religious traditions may need accommodations and support to ensure that they do not fall behind when missing class for religious observances. Global Spiritual Life (GSL) offers guidance to faculty and students on NYU's policies regarding excused absences for religious purposes and ways to support students when they are out.
- If you have any questions or would like to seek guidance around a request related to religious observance, please contact their team at religiousaccommodations@nyu.edu.
- We encourage all Silver community members to refer to this observance calendar created by GSL, and add observance dates to your Google Calendar.
- We also encourage faculty and staff to be aware of resources and support available at NYU Religious Centers (The Bronfman Center, The Catholic Center, The Hindu Center, and The Islamic Center) as well as Prayer and Meditation Spaces at NYU New York, and to read through some Best Practices to Support Muslim Students during Ramadan, taking place the evening of Friday, February 28, 2025, through Saturday, March 29, 2025, as well as FAQs about Pesach (Passover)*, taking place Saturday, April 12, 2025 (sundown) through the evening of Sunday, April 20, 2025 (sundown).
Support for International Students
- International students are encouraged to reach out to the Office of Global Services (OGS) for support with immigration, visa, or OPT related questions.
- Hannah Levy, Academic Advisor for international students, (hannah.levy@nyu.edu) can also work with MSW international students in collaboration with OGS to address issues or concerns. Please note that only OGS can advise students on immigration matters.
- NYU has also added this Supporting Our Global Community webpage.
Support for Students with Accessibility Needs
- The Moses Center for Accessibility and Inclusive Culture partners with the NYU Community worldwide to ensure an accessible university experience for all students with disabilities by removing or minimizing barriers.
- To access services, students must connect directly with the Moses Center for their accessibility needs by contacting the Center at 212-998-4980 or via email at mosescenter@nyu.edu.
- Please note: Student accommodation requests are only shared with the instructor of record. For more information, please read through this Faculty FAQ on student accessibility. Contact the student’s academic advisor if you need assistance or support navigating a particular request.
If a Student is Experiencing Bias or Harassment
- Encourage them to report it to the NYU Bias Response Line via bias.response@nyu.edu, (212) 998-2277, or by completing the Bias Response form.
- NYU Silver has a Climate Support Protocol for Students, separate from and complementary to NYU’s Bias Response Line, which is designed to provide a support system for students who have experienced harm based on their identity(ies).
- Students, staff, and faculty can also discuss their experience directly with the Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, Dr. Richeleen Dashield at rad9975@nyu.edu.
Supporting a Student who Reports Sexual Misconduct
- Faculty and staff at NYU (who are not NYU health clinicians or Spiritual Life Advisors) must inform the Title IX Coordinator in the Office of Equal Opportunity of any report of sexual misconduct: lauren.stabile@nyu.edu or 212-998-2210.
- Note: If the incident occurred at a Practicum placement, faculty and staff must report it to Dr. Anne Dempsey, Assistant Dean for Practicum Education and Community Partnerships at anne.dempsey@nyu.edu.
- Students can receive immediate 24/7 support for all health and safety needs, as well as guidance related to the legal/judicial process, by calling the NYU Wellness Exchange at 212-443-9999.

Fostering Student Belonging and Flourishing
- Here at Silver, we aim to foster belonging and flourishing through a wide range of student councils and interest groups. Students interested in creating a new student group or reviving an inactive student group can contact silver.inclusivestudentlife@nyu.edu for more information. Our resources and events are open to all Silver community members and many are available virtually and in hybrid formats.
- The Center for Multicultural Education and Programs (CMEP), the LGBTQ+ Center, and Global Spiritual Life (GSL) offer a wide range of programs, events, and resources that aim to engage, support, empower, and celebrate our students. Everyone is welcome to join, learn, and connect; to deepen their networks and build bridges across groups.
- NYU has introduced a helpful series on Pronouns and Gender Inclusive Language, as well as other resources to support inclusive classrooms and community at Silver. Students have the opportunity to add their pronouns, as well as the pronunciation of their names, into Albert. This information is accessible to faculty, advisors, and administrators in Albert and other NYU systems. Students can also opt-out of having their pronouns viewable.
- Additionally, faculty and staff are encouraged to engage with resources and educational opportunities available from the Office of Global Inclusion, which provides expert consultation, resources, and innovative strategies to help guide the university toward a more inclusive future.
How You Can Help:
- Spread the Word: Inform your students about these resources and encourage them to adopt a help-seeking mindset approach with the available support.
- Provide Feedback: Share your insights on how we can further improve our support services and resources.
- Collaborate: Work with us to identify students who may benefit from additional support to enable them to flourish at Silver and NYU.
If you need assistance and support of any kind when managing any student needs, please do not hesitate to contact the respective Curriculum Area Chair (see p. 4 of the MSW Student Manual) for MSW students, or a Program Director(s), or me in my capacity here at Silver as the Associate Dean, Student Affairs and Student Ombuds. We are here to support!
Thank you for all that you do for Silver and our students!
