FAVS Students Making a Difference in Their Community

Video for Social Change students at George Mason University put their filmmaking skills into action this past fall semester to help spotlight Northern Virginia's growing challenges with affordable housing, food insecurity, and poverty. Working in close partnership with Cornerstones - one of this region's leading safety-net and human services organizations –the students created four short videos to help amplify the nonprofit's impact messages in conjunction with their 2022 End-of-Year fundraising campaign.

"Support from this fall semester's Video for Social Change class proved to be an extraordinary opportunity for Cornerstones to share its many stories of meaningful social change while also exposing students to the myriad ways nonprofits work and support neighbors in need in our community," notes Margaret Anne Lara, vice-president of Marketing and Communications. "Working closely with our staff and volunteers, the Film and Video Studies students saw firsthand how Cornerstones collaborates with partners, engages the community, and looks ahead to future impact in our area."

"Rebekah Wingert-Jabi's class truly immersed themselves in understanding our mission-driven," added Sarah Casey, director of Faith-based and Community Engagement at Cornerstones. "Their videos did an excellent job conveying the important and meaningful relationships between Cornerstones staff, volunteers, donors, advocates, clients, and neighbors. Thanks to meaningful community collaboration and support, like with the Video for Social Change teams, Cornerstones can continue to help vulnerable people in our community achieve stability, empowerment, and hope.”

Faculty Achievement
