Luke 1:3-4
With this in mind, since I myself have carefully investigated everything from the beginning, I too decided to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, so that you may know the certainty of the things you have been taught.
New International Version (NIV)
Do you ever get somebody else’s mail?  We have lived in our home for thirteen years and others still get our mail as we get theirs.  Luke addressed his gospel and its sequel, Acts, to someone named Theophilus.  The word means, “One who loves God.”  Perhaps it was an official in the ancient world.  Or is it code for all who want to know more about Jesus.  In the last 2000 years, a lot of people have picked up Luke’s books.  For the next few weeks, we join them.

Is this book for you?  Every day the Jewish families recited the “Shema,” saying, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your strength.”  So when someone asked Jesus, about the greatest commandment he said, “Love the Lord your God . . .”  Later Paul, whom Luke accompanied on journeys would write, “All things work together for good for those who love God . . .”

Make no mistake, Luke wrote to all who already loved Jesus and also to those who would fall in love with him by hearing his story.  Someday we may meet Theophilus in the Holy City.  When we do, will he call us Theophilus too?  No doubt about it, this book is for you.

 Pray with me:
Father, your love for us is a safer subject than our love for you.   If we love you today, of course, it is because you first loved us.  Help us to love you today.  Help us to love you first and best.  Speak to us from Jesus’ story.  Let our hearts burn within us as we hear your story.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
This year we focus our Every Day with Jesus readings on Jesus’ story.  With references to Tallowood's Read Through the Bible in 2018 daily reading plan, let's focus our undivided attention on Jesus and follow where he lead. He will not fail. Neither will we!

Joyfully,
