SUMMERTIME IN THE CHI!

Illinois Partners for Human Services

"To kick-off the unofficial start to Summer, we’re sharing the experiences of reframing trailblazer, Judith Gethner, founding Executive Director, Illinois Partners for Human Service, a statewide coalition of over 800 organizations. Since 2009, Illinois Partners has been leading research and campaigns to rebrand and reframe human services throughout the state."

Racism Cannot be Separated from Capitalism

Yanique Redwood, President and CEO of the Consumer Health Foundation
In response to a lawsuit filed by attorney Aristotle Theresa against the District of Columbia alleging classism, racism and ageism embedded in the District’s housing policies, Dr. Derek Hyra, an American University professor and author of Race, Class and Politics in the Cappuccino City, stated that “Developers want to maximize their return. This is not a conspiracy. This is capitalism.” The suggestion inherent in his quote is that land happens to be cheap in African-American communities and if developers buy low and sell high, well that’s just capitalism in action.

I wonder if Dr. Hyra and others who hold his position would refashion their thinking about capitalism if they more deeply considered its genesis in America. Click here to continue reading...

'Grassroots' Plan Seeks Accountability For Police Leadership

Mecole Jordan, an organizer with the Grassroots Alliance for Police Accountability, was recently on WBEZ to talk about the GAPA proposal for civilian oversight of the Chicago Police Department. Click here to hear her talk with Morning Shift host Tony Sarabia!

North Lawndale College Prep High School students are training other Chicago youth in nonviolent conflict resolution over six weeks (due to a grant, it's free!!).
The students are certified through a 40 hour trainers' training, learning the history of nonviolent conflicts, reading heavy works like King's "The Pilgrimage of Nonviolence", debating the idea of "retaliation" in the streets, and learning modules to teach other people how to resolve conflict. They will come to you!

Click here for the electronic summer training calendar where you can sign up your team of youth. They are training youth ages 12-18 (with some exceptions for those who fall outside of that range; please communicate with them about any of those exceptions). Click here for summaries of nonviolent work and more information on this summer's program
