So Many Reasons to Celebrate

The Seraph-McSparren Pediatric Inpatient Center at Lancaster General Hospital is celebrating its one year birthday this month! The Center, as well as the Child Life program was funded by donors during the "Soaring to New Heights" Pediatric Campaign that raised over $9.6 million. When the new Center opened on September 26, 2019, the space was transformed into an interactive and welcoming environment that promotes healing while offering cutting-edge pediatric care. Our Child Life specialists help kiddos (and their families) navigate the stress and anxiety of a hospital stay while offering compassionate care to our youngest patients as they undergo procedures and receive test results.
Child Life is not a billable service in hospitals, so these critical positions are funded by the Child Life Endowment at the LG Health Foundation. Learn more about how Child Life specialists make a difference in pediatric health by watching the video below.

Grateful Families
Here are three families who stayed in the Seraph-McSparren Pediatric Inpatient Center during the past year and benefitted from the care of the clinical team and Child Life specialists:
| |
“We are so grateful that this resource exists in our community. The pediatric center doctors, nurses, and the Child Life team were amazing. We felt completely cared for while our son was in the hospital. I was nine months pregnant at the time my son was admitted and concerned about my impending due date and making sure my husband and daughter could be with us. I gave birth a few days after my son was discharged and we were all able to be together. We were so grateful for our experience, and after learning that the Child Life team and many of the toys, books, and equipment that we benefitted from during our stay were provided by donors, we decided to repay their kindness. We organized a toy drive and collected items from the Child Life Wish List to donate to the pediatric unit as a thank you for making our stay so special."

“As a new mom, it was scary to take my baby to a hospital, especially during a pandemic. I was instantly put at ease with help from the Child Life team, doctors, and nurses working in the pediatric inpatient center. I cannot express how grateful we are for the whole LGH team and all the donors who made this all possible. It was such a frightening thing, but everyone was incredible! Eric at the front desk, Amanda the cleaning lady, Matt and Jacqui from food services, literally every single nurse, PCA, doctor, and the Child Life specialists; everyone was so kind and became family over our 17 days there." "My husband and I are so grateful for such a professional and pleasant experience during my daughter’s appendectomy care at LGH. From the emergency room to the operating room, and everything about the Pediatric Department! Our stay was comfortable, pleasant, and even fun for my daughter with the Child Life specialist involvement. As a parent, I was very impressed with the excellent medical care my daughter received in every department we experienced. My family would like to sincerely thank all those who took part in healing our daughter and all those who contributed to creating such a comforting pediatric floor. Thank you!“
Christy and Brian - Grateful Parents
"I loved the big TV and the view from my room. I loved watching the sunrise and seeing rainbows after a storm. It felt like I was on vacation! Thank you to everyone who made this place possible and to the Child Life specialists for making me feel so loved. Happy first birthday to the pediatric center!"

Make our Wish Come True!
We are so thankful to the community for their support as we celebrate this important program. As we look forward to more birthdays at the Seraph-McSparren Pediatric Inpatient Center, we hope you will join us in our effort to grow the Child Life Endowment so that we can expand Child Life services across our health system.
