San José State University (SJSU) and the California State University (CSU) have received notice of an investigation by the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights (OCR) regarding allegations of antisemitism from the 2023-2024 academic year. We are carefully reviewing the materials sent by OCR and will respond through OCR’s investigative process. It is important to note that the opening of an investigation is not a finding that the University violated federal law.
We recognize that news of this investigation may be concerning to members of our community. SJSU remains committed to supporting anyone who experiences antisemitism or any other form of unlawful discrimination or harassment. At San José State, the safety, dignity and well-being of every member of our community matter deeply.
SJSU has consistently denounced antisemitism and hate and remains steadfast in our commitment to addressing violence, discrimination and harassment. We have taken, and will continue to take, actions to support the safety and well-being of our students, faculty and staff.
As you can read on our information page about this investigation, SJSU’s initial statement sought to clarify a misleading implication in the Department of Education’s press release, which attributes a quote to a former SJSU administrator. That statement was never made by any representative of San José State University. We will post future updates on the investigation on that page.
As the OCR process moves forward, the University will respond through the appropriate investigative channels. At the same time, our focus remains on our campus community and on creating an environment where everyone feels safe, respected and supported.
