People. Places. Things To Do. |
|
| | Hello friends,
The best part of some interviews never make it to the radio.
When I spoke with acclaimed banjo virtuoso Béla Fleck this week about his upcoming show at the Gillioz, it wasn’t his résumé that stayed with me — though it’s hard to ignore a 19-time Grammy winner who has carried the banjo from bluegrass into jazz, classical, and far beyond.🪕🏆
What lingered was his genuine humility: four decades in, he still seems quietly grateful that people care enough to listen. You can hear that in our Arts News conversation, but it’s something different to be a part of it up close.
I also checked in with the artists building “99x: Prohibition,” the Springfield Art Museum’s annual night of spectacle. Picture the Shrine Mosque after hours. Low light pooling in doorways. A hush at the stairwell. A hint of brass from somewhere down the hall. The stylists walked me through how fashion, light, and sound will pull you into a 1920s scene that feels alive for one night. 🌙🍸✨
That’s the vibe this week: deep devotion to craft and underground revelry. Pull up a chair and step into The Green Room with me.

Best case scenario, you’re reading this on Friday morning.
September 26th, 2025, to be specific.
If you haven’t made your weekend plans - Gonerfest. MEMPHIS. Right now. You could go. I was there once, 14 years ago. One of the finest weekends of my life. And you could be doing this. Right now.
Or, Play Loud Fest. KANSAS CITY. You could go.
OR, EvoLOUtion Festival ST. LOUIS. You could also…GO.
All of these things are happening in the next few days. You could just get in a car (ideally, yours) and drive to any of these fine events. RIGHT. NOW. Who’s to say you’d be sorry?
We sometimes take for granted, living in our little continental crossroads, that a lot of great art comes VERY close to us, if not always entirely in town. This weekend, SO MANY great bands are within striking distance of our happy little hamlet. Three fantastic music festivals, all featuring amazing local, regional, national, and international acts, are happening within hours of here.
For just a tiny taste, Snooper is a fine band out of Nashville that landed on my radar when they played in Springfield earlier this summer, at a house show, in a basement. Their next two shows after this weekend are at the Hollywood Palladium and Third Man Records, but you could stand in front of them in a sweaty dive bar in Memphis. You never know what you’ll find with a little adventure. Life is short. Be spontaneous. Carpe diem. Listen to “Worldwide” by Snooper, and we’ll see you next week!
