Hello,
Congratulations, Class of 2026 graduates!
As spring term comes to a close, below are updates on the summer building hours and critical maintenance construction work.
Thank you for reading the Scoop.

Some Familiar Summer Hours at Smith, Some Not

During the summer months, Smith’s building hours will hew close to normal while many amenities and operations will be reduced.
Planned hours are:
  • PSU ID general access — 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. daily.
  • General public hours (SW Broadway doors open) — 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday-Friday. No public hours on weekends.
  • Scheduled events held outside of general public hours will have special access available at the SW Broadway doors. Make sure your event is scheduled with CESU ahead of time to ensure this.
  • Professional staff with 24/7 access, and student staff with extended access, will continue to have that level of access during the summer, unless your department has requested otherwise.
  • University Market will be closed the week of June 15. Summer hours begin June 22, and the Market will be open 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday-Friday.
  • Bowery Bagels will close after commencement and reopen Monday, July 7, through Friday, Sept. 4. Planned hours are 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. M-Th. Fridays are still TBD and it is possible they will be closed some Fridays
  • Smith’s Kitchen and Smith’s Place coffee shop will close for the summer beginning Monday, June 15.
  • The PSU Info hub in the Broadway lobby will be closed over the summer.
Crane truck lifts equipment to the southwest corner roof of Smith.
A crane truck lifts roofing materials to a landing platform on top of Smith. As a precaution during these lifts, offices and resource centers directly below the landing areas are closed.
Next Crane Lift: Thursday, June 11

The biggest construction impact for most folks — outside of the wait for THE elevator — are the occasional crane picks. With roof contractors on site, materials are being lifted on a regular basis.
A lift of materials occurred Monday, June 8, and more are scheduled in the days ahead: Thursday, June 11, and Wednesday, June 17. During these picks the southwest corner of the fourth and third floors will need to be inaccessible from 5 a.m. to around 11 a.m., as a precaution.
On the fourth floor, this will primarily impact the Dean of Student Life’s office. On the third floor, the Vanport room, Campus AV storage and Smith 333 will be closed.
In an update from last week’s pick, the WRC | QRC has been OK’d to remain open during this work.
No entrances to Smith will be blocked but portions of the breezeway between Smith and FMH will be cordoned off. Pedestrian and bike traffic will be allowed to pass back and forth.
The semis with materials will be crossing the Park Blocks from SW 10th Ave.
Also FYI: A crane pick related to HVAC and elevator work is planned for Friday, June 19, 2026. While happening on the Juneteenth holiday, it will impact the use of the SW Broadway entrance. More information on hours and offices that may need to be left empty during that work is coming soon.
YOUR HELP IS NEEDED ... ONE STEP AT A TIME
We encourage everyone who can to use the stairs to do so when possible. With only Elevator 7 operating for the next few weeks between the sub-basement and fourth floor, this will help reduce wait times for those who need a lift.
Campus Event staff members Matt Berger and Lisa Hudspeth watch over a 2025 commencement event.
Matt Berger has been planning events with the Campus Events & Student Union department since he was a student at Portland State. Lisa Hudspeth brought career experience working with event and catering services to her PSU role coordinating activities with student organizations and others.
Bon Voyage to Some CESU Favorites
The Campus Events & Student Union staff — which helps schedule and book thousands of events on campus each year — is sad to say good-bye to two of our longtime coordinators.
Matt Berger, who works with community and administrative clients as External & University Events Manager, and Scheduling and Events Coordinator Lisa Hudspeth, who aids student organizations and departments, are leaving Portland State University this month.
Lisa is retiring to spend time traveling and with family.
Matt is taking his events game to the next level with an international firm.
We wish them the best in their next chapters — and will miss their hard-work and wit.
Yes. You Can Hold Parties at the Viking Gameroom This Summer
The Viking Gameroom in the basement of Smith — recently voted a Best of Rose City party space — will be available for gatherings and events over the summer. However, there will be no open lane or pool table hours during the week.
Staffed by talented student employees, the Gameroom is best served as a party destination only during these months. You can find out more about event packages on their webpage.
