Treaty Signing at Fort Loudon

Featured Primary Source

"Treaty Signing at Fort Loudon" is a 1941 sketch depicting the signing of the 1761 peace treaty between Virginia colonists and Cherokee tribesmen. The Fort Loudon massacre had occurred a year prior. The signing of the peace treaty between Virginians and the Cherokee was an attempt at mediating relationships between the two groups.
This source meets the 4.03 and 8.13 Tennessee social studies standards.

Woman Suffrage DocsBox

DocsBox Program Now Open for the 2018-2019 School Year!

It's hard to believe our DocsBox program turns a year old this October! We're delighted announce that we have added a Woman Suffrage DocsBox to our collection. The new DocsBox examines the "War of the Roses" in Tennessee through primary sources and reproduction materials. Perfect for 5th grade and high school! 
If you are new to our DocsBox program, welcome! DocsBoxes are education teaching boxes designed by classroom teachers that pair Library and Archives' primary sources with reproduction materials. Currently, we have seven topics. For more information on this exciting program or to reserve your DocsBox (plenty of dates still available!), please visit our website.    

Workshop Announcement! 

We're excited to announce our teacher workshop series for the 2018-2019 school year! Be sure to join us for Movers and Shakers: Awakened Reformers of the 1800s! This workshop will focus on the early reform movements of the 19th century, such as the Second Great Awakening, Abolition, the Underground Railroad and early Woman Suffrage. 
Movers and Shakers is perfect for 4th grade, 8th grade, and Tennessee history educators. Lunch and six hours of professional development will be provided.

Happy new school year! Our Education Outreach team has been busy traveling the state this summer with the Tennessee State Museum providing workshops for teachers on our resources for Tennessee classrooms. In June, we finished off our World War I workshop series and got busy planning our series for the 2018-2019 school year. Stay tuned for dates and locations coming in the next few weeks!

A Student History of Tennessee

We're excited to announce a brand new resource for students! The Blue Book Student Edition is now available to teachers and students via this website.
For those unfamiliar with our Blue Book, the Tennessee Blue Book serves as a manual of useful information on our state and government, both past and present. It contains information on the makeup of Tennessee state government, state history, national and state constitutions, most recent election results and census data.
