Lots of Construction, Lots of Change in Smith

It’s not fair to say a lot has changed in Smith over the summer, because it is still changing. As fall term begins, here is the status of several projects in (and around) the student union:
View of the work in progress in the food pantry space. Metal frames and cement floor seen.
FOOD PANTRY — At the start of the term, the Food Pantry remains located in the one-time Green Zebra (across SW Broadway and one block north).
Its permanent home in the basement, SMITH 47, is undergoing a full remodel that will feature more space for students to find food, more storage for donations and on-site offices for the food pantry staff. It should reopen in Smith late this term.
When the pantry does returns to the basement, it will be re-christened the Smallwood Food Pantry in honor of former pantry manager Bobby Smallwood. As a security officer at Legacy Good Samaritan, Smallwood was killed in July while protecting the safety of others during an incident with a gunman.
Almost completed, the pale wood and comforting paint of the new mind spa in the Veterans Resource Center are seen.
VETERANS RESOURCE CENTER — The VRC is now a remodeled environment that supports students who served. Drop by starting this week (grand reopening on Wednesday) to see the new look, new amenities and take a peek at the mysterious Mind Spa. The VRC is located in SMITH 018, in the northeast corner of the basement.
Work on the Menasa Student Center. Exposed walls, a orange worker lift and exposed ceiling panels are seen.
MENASA STUDENT CENTER – The former Browsing Lounge in SMITH 238 is updating its look and offerings in order to provide even more campus support for students from Middle East, North Africa, South Asia cultures. Look for it to reopen in mid to late October.
Interior of the Quiet Prayer and Meditation Lounge space. Paper over the carpet and fresh drywall are visible.
QUIET PRAYER & MEDITATION LOUNGE — The QPML is now located in SMITH 010 (near the VRC), just down the hall from its former spot in the Smith basement. The renovated lounge will be opening in October. In the meantime, students and staff can reserve a private study room in the Millar Library for prayer. Check out the library's website for more info.
View from the third-floor skybridge of early morning work being done in the new Dreamers Student Center between Smith and Cramer.
DREAMERS STUDENT CENTER — Not quite in Smith, the new Dreamers center will be located in the fourth-floor skybridge between the student union and Cramer Hall. Center construction should be finished soon with the hope it can be opened early in the fall term. It might even be open by the time you read this ...
The new coffee shop and cafe in Smith nears completion with some furniture and amenities in place.
SMITH’S COFFEE + EATS — A new coffee shop and cafe is opening in the Broadway lobby. Smith’s Coffee + Eats is bringing a Portland-oriented menu of biscuits, pastries and grab-and-go food. Plus they’ll be featuring Water Avenue Coffee — try the special Viking Blend! It’s operated by the folks who already bring us Bowery Bagels. Planned opening: 8 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 26.
Bowery Bagels opens for the term at 7 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 26.
Signs for Ace Sushi, one of the new food vendors in Smith, are ready to be hung in the food court.
SMITH’S KITCHEN CHANGES — Food vendors Ace Sushi, Kunniq Sausage Grill and Shawrma Spot will be taking over the stations in the Food Court with new options for lunch. Planned opening: 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 26. Bashas Mediterranean is now available at the Versa Cafe in Viking Pavilion.

Remember: Coffee + Eats, Bowery Bagels and the food court vendors all take Dining Dollars.

TBD — The ASPSU Children's Center is in transition. Though closed for child care at this time, there will be work done in the center for its next iteration.
GoneDue to changes in OIT’s on-campus printer network, the printer in the University Market has been removed. Printers are still available in the library and OIT labs in FMH and Cramer.
Jason Washington installation clarification — In the Sept. 25 PSU Currently, it was reported a rememberance of Jason Washington will be installed in the future "on the Smith Memorial Student Union mezzanine." The installation will be located on the south wall of the second floor study lounge. The hope is some space there can be for discovery and conversation around the issues raised.
