February is American Heart Month |
Heart disease is the number one killer of men and women in the United States. According to CDC data, 1 in every 5 deaths in the United States in 2022 was caused by heart disease. There are many things you can do to bolster your heart health, such as maintaining a normal blood pressure and weight, eating healthy, exercising for 150 minutes per week, not smoking, limiting alcohol intake, getting enough sleep, and managing stress levels. It is also important to see your doctor regularly and follow their recommendations. Learning CPR is another way you can help someone experiencing a cardiac emergency.

Valentine’s Day & Mental Health |
Valentine’s Day can be a challenging time for many students, especially those experiencing heightened levels of loneliness. The holiday’s emphasis on romantic relationships can intensify feelings of isolation for those who are single, grieving a lost relationship, or struggling with social connections. According to a 2023 study, loneliness can have serious effects on mental and physical health, even contributing to a higher risk of mortality. Social isolation and a lack of support can lead to increased stress, anxiety, and depression, making this holiday particularly difficult for some. It is important to acknowledge these feelings and recognize that they are valid.
To support your mental well-being during this time, focus on self-care, engage in activities that bring joy, and connect with friends, family, or supportive communities. Practicing gratitude, setting healthy social media boundaries, and reminding oneself that love exists in many forms—not just romantic—can be helpful.
If feelings of loneliness or distress become overwhelming, seeking professional support is a great option. The Health and Wellness Center is here to support you through this time. We encourage you to reach out and schedule an appointment with us. Call us at 949.451.5221 to schedule an appointment today.
