Dear Silver Students,
We are pleased to offer Silver undergraduate and master-level students the amazing opportunity to join our student cohort of Restorative Justice (RJ) practitioners. RJ is a process to repair relationships between individuals and communities. The work needed to become a restorative practitioner begins with a mindset and self-examination of personal assumptions and beliefs that prevent this healing and connection with humanity. The restorative justice practice aligns with the Silver mission and core pillars of accountability, trust, community, and transparency. This training provides opportunities for students to unpack and explore the RJ mindset and alignment with Social Work practices, foster meaningful connections, and restore harmed relationships.

"I found the restorative justice training to be extremely helpful in demonstrating what it means to embrace and treat others with empathy. What I loved most about the training was that it reminded me of the importance of humanizing and understanding each other, something that can be lost really easily when it comes to issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion. Because of the training, I find myself incorporating the skills I learned not only in my professional roles and interactions with students and peers, but also in my interpersonal relationships." -Gerri Connaught, PhD Student and Silver Peer Advocate

“Participating in the Restorative Justice training was an enlightening experience for me personally. I felt refreshed during the training, and multiple people felt the same about Restorative Justice practices. The training brought different ages, education levels, and mindsets together to collaborate on a collective goal: healing. The healing circles incorporated during the training created a sense of community within the group and created openness about certain uncomfortable topics. I believe this training would benefit the student body of the Silver School of Social Work, as many of these conversations are necessary for individual and communal growth in the social work field.” - Travis Harrington, MSW 2022

"RJ training was one of the highlights of the semester. Sometimes doing additional workshops or training on top of a busy life can feel draining. However, I was always looking forward to attending RJ training and relearning/resharpening my RJ skills and adding them to my toolbox as a social worker. I am excited that the Silver Social Work School is leaning more toward RJ as a fundamental practice and can't wait to see the change it brings on campus as more students become familiar. I would highly recommend being a part of and expanding your scope of what it means to be a social worker." - Rox Costello, MSW student, Inclusive Engagement and Student Life Intern

"The Restorative Justice training enabled me to consider how our stories and individual and collective experiences have shaped us. It provided an encouraging environment for everyone to come together, listen, share, reflect and walk away with tangible skills that will help me in my future personal and professional circles!” -Michelle Escamilla Valladares, MSW Student, Inclusive Engagement and Student Life Intern

“In Fall 2021, I received the opportunity to attend the Restorative Justice training for Students. I was surprised by the diversity, openness to learn and compassion that I experienced in the training. I was moved by the meaningful reflective prompts and breakout room conversations that took place, compelling me to intimately reflect upon my own lived experiences and how they shape the way that I show up in the spaces that I occupy. Something that stood out to me was how the practice of empathic listening was so central to RJ. This experience truly encompassed a holistic, person-in-environment approach which is so important to consider while sitting in a community healing space, especially as a Social Work student. I highly recommend attendance in this training to any student who is new to RJ and interested in learning more about it!” -Aadya (Adia) Bhatia, MSW Student, DEI Peer Advocate
