Public policy is a discipline that recognizes that people want and need different things, and different policy processes can lead to dramatically different outcomes. Yet, despite these apparent differences, competing worldviews are still working towards a common goal of making the world better.

It is just that the better world might look different depending on where you view it from. At a time when Americans are increasingly concerned about the tone of our political discourse, the Sanford School of Public Policy continues to foster conversations that do not demand conformity in our views but find commonality in our objectives. The Bridging the Divide Series, hosted by Polis: Center for Politics at the Sanford School, has been a centerpiece in that effort. We bring high-profile speakers with differing views on policy issues so our students can see the push and pull of policy debates, when expressed civilly and grounded in facts, as critical – and even necessary -- for successful public policy development. Indeed, despite the partisan political coverage commonly seen in our media, the truth is that policymaking in Congress, especially in the U.S. Senate, is possible through bipartisanship.

Join Sanford Serves to once again support Turning the Page, a nonprofit co-founded by Sanford alumnus Jason King PPS'94, which serves to maximize parents' and caregivers' involvement in their children's learning.

Volunteers will support Turning the Page at a community book sale and learning festival by creating a welcoming, family-friendly learning environment by setting up and breaking down the space, engaging children and caregivers through simple craft activities, and supporting staff throughout the day. Shifts are available beginning at 8:00 am and concluding at 6:00 pm.

Sharma has built a career around understanding the full story. As Head of Policy & Strategy at Apple in India, she works at the intersection of government, business, and global economic systems, helping shape conversations on issues ranging from manufacturing and supply chains to technology and regulation. But long before she stepped into policy leadership, Sharma spent nearly a decade as a journalist, reporting on many of the same forces she now helps navigate. That early experience continues to define her approach.

With a master’s degree in broadcast journalism, Sharma developed a sharp instinct for asking questions, connecting perspectives, and examining how decisions play out in the real world.
