Bridgeport City News | Bill Finch, Mayor

"Breaking Ground on Bridgeport Revitalization"  - WTNH
A long-neglected site in downtown Bridgeport is going to get a makeover.  Mayor Bill Finch joined developers, city staff and other elected leaders for the groundbreaking of the revitalization project of the Jayson Building on Middle Street and the Newfield Building on Main Street. They will be combined into one structure, the Jayson-Newfield Building.
The Jayson-Newfield Building is one of many revitalization projects that are planned to launch over the next two years in Bridgeport’s Downtown North area.
“This is primarily about jobs. There will be jobs in constructing these buildings. There will be jobs for workers that are living here, and once complete, there will be jobs in the retail sites being created on this block,” said Bridgeport Mayor Bill Finch.
"Bridgeport Plans To Use An Old Landfill For Green Energy" - WSHU
Bridgeport, Connecticut is planning to install 9,000 solar panels on an unused landfill. It's one of the latest projects to reclaim polluted land in the city.
This 11-acre landfill is on a hill overlooking a harbor and Long Island Sound. It's got a great view, but it’s been vacant for years. Installing solar panels on it will provide power for about 5,000 homes. Speaking at the landfill Friday alongside city council members, Bridgeport Mayor Bill Finch said they’ll break ground next month.
"And the next time we're all up here, there'll be a vast array, one of the largest arrays in Connecticut, of solar panels and two fuel cells creating jobs right here in Connecticut," Finch said.

"Ohio Joins Dustup Over Claim by Connecticut to be ‘First in Flight’" - CT Mirror

The Ohio state legislature has introduced a resolution disparaging Connecticut’s claims to be “First in Flight,” reigniting a fight over whether the Wright brothers or Gustave Whitehead, a German immigrant who lived in Fairfield, were the first to fly a powered aircraft.
Whitehead supporters say he flew his plane about 40 or 50 feet into the air in August of 1901, two years before the Wright brothers, who were from Dayton, Ohio, flew their aircraft in Kitty Hawk, N.C.
Bridgeport Mayor Bill Finch said, “It’s been proven by ‘Jane’s All the World Aircraft.’ A poor German immigrant made history in Bridgeport, Fairfield, and Stratford. We want to make sure Ohio legislators know the truth and stick to it.”

"Bridgeport Mayor, Officials Offer Winter Weather, Road Safety Tips" - Bridgeport Daily Voice

Bridgeport Mayor Bill Finch joined city officials Tuesday to discuss winter weather conditions and hazards, road safety, warming center locations and health considerations as the city faces plunging temperatures and snow.
On Tuesday, Gov. Dannel Malloy issued a severe cold weather alert due to the forecast showing cold temperatures Tuesday evening, with wind chill factor temperatures predicted to be in the low single digits or below zero each night into Saturday morning. “We hope for the best and plan for the worst,” said Finch. “We’re tracking the forecast and conditions closely. We have a plan in place to keep kids and families safe regardless of the weather conditions we face.”
