Tallowood Times | Remember Tallowood Tomorrow

Dear Community of Joy
Jesus said, "I am making all things new." How is Christ making each of us and all of us together at Tallowood new? Ann Bradshaw, the leader of our 2020 Implementation Committee presented to our Committee of Committees and Business Meetings on Sunday. This committee, comprised of Grady Randle, Dana Dudley, Richard Hollis, Margaret Campbell, David Stockton and Elizabeth Hankins is working on our three 2020 initiatives: Make Relationships, Make Disciples and Make an Impact. They are taking the two page report from the 2020 Committee and working with staff and committee leaders to bring those recommendations into reality.

At the same time, God is bringing many of our dreams for Tallowood into reality. This past Sunday over twenty joined Tallowood as new members. Tallowood is growing younger and more diverse every Sunday. Our year long focus on Discipleship is 2/3 of the way complete this Sunday. This beginning leads us toward a life-long focus of making disciple makers as a church. Last week our brothers and sister from Brainerd Baptist Church in Chattanooga came and met with some thirty of our lay leaders and staff to initiate the process of discipleship groups at Tallowood. Brainerd began with three small groups eight years ago with about 15 people. This year over 800 people are engaged in small group discipleship. These D-groups in no way replace our continuing commitment to large group discipleship in Sunday School and worship. Sunday School is the "church organized" at Tallowood. We continue to think together about thinking for a change in our weekend worship services. We continue in Philippians 4 for the next few weeks centering our worship in the Secret of Contentment and the Joy of Giving. How are we as apprentices of Jesus to think about his provision for us and through us in the work of the Kingdom? I can't wait to share with you publicly what God is teaching me privately in study.

Last weekend our Saturday night congregation moved into the third floor of our new building which houses The Point on the second floor. It felt like home! We are so thankful for this gift to our church. Laura Barrett, one of our new ministers will lead the ministry and programming of the Point. We want the second floor of this building to be a disciple-making place for the students in our community. Pray with us as we open the doors of this fantastic space to the young people in our church and community. Jesus is making all things new. How is he working in you?

We love loving you!

Duane

Welcome to New Staff!

We welcome Laura Barrett to the Tallowood staff as the new part time Point coordinator. Laura is the wife of Josh Barrett, our pastoral intern and comes to us with degrees from Oklahoma Baptist University and Truitt Seminary. She will be coordinating The Point and helping us with programs to make relationships, make disciples and make an impact with students.

We also welcome our two new youth interns to Tallowood and the student ministry. Tyler Ballard and Tyler Jones will work part time with us to focus on making relationships with students, making disciples and making an impact in the Kingdom of God. Tyler Jones will be the "pastor" to the Tallowood students and their friends that attend Memorial High School and Tyler Ballard will "pastor" the group of students that go to Stratford High School. Our goal over the next few years is to have 8 youth interns as we reach out to the Katy, Cy Fair and Houston schools where we have Tallowood members. Thank you for praying for these guys as they begin their work this year. They will be with us until next August.

Sherry Barker, Interim Women's Ministry Director

Sherry Barker, a member of Tallowood since 1980, has agreed to lead our Women's Ministry for the immediate future. Sherry has been active in a teaching role with the ministry and is well known among the women of the church. She is a real estate professional, working with Greenwood King in the Memorial area, and is married to Greg.

She has been in dialogue with Kelly King and our leadership team to guide ministry development for the upcoming fall activities. I don't know anyone who knows the church better or has more concern for Tallowood women. She knows the challenges facing working women, women who are not working outside of the home and women who are in transitions. I am thankful for her partnership. - Larry Heslip
