Co-Teaching & Other Inclusive Strategies

with Petra Nelson


ESD 123 is delighted to bring Petra Nelson, special education teacher and national presenter, back for the 2021-2022 school year to support teachers and administrators improve outcomes for students with learning challenges. 
She will be offering both classes and ongoing coaching support. Schools in the ESD 123 region may qualify for funding to support this work. All workshops will be presented virtually, unless where indicated otherwise.

21-22 Co-Teaching Cohort

Inclusive practices support all learners. Co-teaching is one way to create an inclusive environment for student with disabilities, ESL, or at risk learners. 
This 7-part series is designed to help co-teaching teams make the most of their time in the classroom (whether remotely or in-person).

Details: 

  • Participants should already be part of a co-teaching team 
  • Recordings of each session will be available for two weeks following the session
  • Cost: $140 (buildings/districts in the ESD 123 region may be eligible to participate at a reduced cost)
  • 14 clock hours available

Co-Teaching 101

This session will focus on co-teaching basics, what it is, what it should look like, and teacher responsibilities.

Collaborating with Para-Educators for Improved Student Learning

Weds.-Thurs., October 20 | 3-4 PM & 
October 21 | 12-3 PM
Para-educators are vital in supporting effective outcomes for students with disabilities. In the first session, teachers and para-educators will focus on the collaboration process. Together the partners will define roles and an effective communication process that supports positive outcomes for students.
In the second session, teachers will learn how to support their para-educator by: planning tasks that ensure active student engagement; providing strategies to help the para-educator support multiple learners, encourage independence, and collect student data.
  • 2 Sessions: Teacher and Para Session (October 20) & Teacher Only Session (October 21)
  • Cost: $35 * for teachers; para-educators attend at no cost
  • Paraeducators must be enrolled separately by contacting Kelly Correio or Angela Puzycki

This session will focus on what it takes to build, maintain, and evaluate a co-teaching program from an administrator’s perspective.

Master Scheduling to Promote Inclusive Practices

Thurs., February 17 & March 17 | 2-3 PM
Master scheduling is vital for any school program. Co-teaching is no exception. This session will focus on creating a master schedule using specific strategies to promote a successful co-teaching program.
  • 2 sessions
  • Online via Zoom with possibility of limited in-person seating
  • Cost: $25 *

Training and/or Coaching Support from Petra Nelson

Petra Nelson provides individualized professional development support for schools looking to improve outcomes for students receiving special education services. Schools can request trainings specific to their goals and needs, and/or utilize Petra as an instructional coach to improve the effectiveness of co-teaching.
Details:
  • Individualized support available as single event, ongoing training, coaching, etc.
  • Cost: $1200/day (ESD 123 is providing mini grants to help buildings cover the fee for service of for up to 4 days.)
