To Care is Human Podcast
Nikki Montgomery is a patient, a mother to a son with complex medical challenges and a certified patient advocate. As a Black woman, she understands the necessity for culturally competent care. How does a patient find a culturally competent provider? Nikki shares her strategies on that topic and pushes us to address systemic racism through measurement. This podcast brings the conversations usually had in our living rooms to the public domain.

Family Centered Rounds (FCR) are multidisciplinary rounds that are intended to engage patients and families in exchange of information and shared decision-making about a patient’s care. Parents’ and/or patients’ experiences with FCR contribute to their overall hospital experiences. This study seeks to 1) understand and define the practice of FCR, and 2) understand the impact of FCR on parents’ experiences while their children are hospitalized.

Tiffany Christensen, CPXP, Vice President, Experience Integration, The Beryl Institute
"Somewhere along the way, in the US at least, we have become a culture in which personal discomfort—emotional or physical—is regarded as something to avoid at all costs. In some ways, we have become so attached to being comfortable we have developed a low threshold for discomfort or pain; even if it’s not our own. This makes me wonder: if healthcare is not a place where we can sit together in discomfort, where might that place be?"
