February 2018 Email Newsleter                           Hanging Rock Christian Camp

From the Camp Director,

I get asked all the time I bet you like this slow time at the camp. So wanted to share what the slow period looks like here at Hanging Rock:
  • Putting together a team for summer camp. Meeting prospective summer staff, dishwashers, cooks & maintenance staff.
  • Making sure all of our recreation elements have been inspected and are going to be ready for summer camp.
  • Getting all of our manuals ready for event coordinators, faculty and staff.
  • Promoting camp at all events and churches.
  • Working with our February Retreats
  • Getting our Annual Report out to our churches
  • Getting the Chapel remodeled
  • Cleaning, setting up and tearing down for retreats
I usually just smile and say yes. But, if you ever wonder what your staff at Hanging Rock is doing then I wanted to give you a clear picture. We are having fun, I can tell you that. Everyone of us have a passion for Hanging Rock and can't wait until camp is here again.
I can't believe Jennifer and I will be here 10 years in May. We have taken some time to reflect on everything that we have been a part of in that 10 years and we are amazed at all the things that God has done here at Hanging Rock! We FEEL blessed.
Keep us in your prayers as we prepare for another great summer! Don't forget to get your kids signed up for camp!!
Love Serving our Savior Through Camp Ministry,
Gary Baker

Something New: by Todd Blair
We are excited to announce that this coming summer we have a big change for our Junior and Senior High Wilderness camp. These campers already get the great opportunity of staying in our cabins, but we wanted to add an element of fun and adventure to their week. So, starting this year, they will be going off site for a camping trip! This way they will get to experience some new things they may not have had in the past. Junior High will be camping Tuesday night, and Senior High will be camping both Tuesday and Wednesday night! They will be staying at Shades State Park in the youth tent camping areas. This will be an opportunity to go off-site, and experience the wilderness at other places as well as enjoy it here at HRCA the rest of the week. The plan is to pack up Tuesday morning and head to the park and get tents and such set up. Then spend the rest of the time hiking, tubing down Sugar Creek (creek levels permitting), exploring God’s creation, spending some quiet time in nature, and helping cook the meals while there. We understand that one of the exciting things in the past was helping prepare meals at the cabins, and since we can’t cook there anymore we thought this would be a way to help bring that aspect back to these camps!

Hanging Rock will provide all the camping equipment like tents, tarps, cooking equipment, utensils, all the food, and stuff like that. Each camper will be required to bring his or her own sleeping bag, pillows, toiletries, clothes, Bible, pen, paper. All the normal stuff you bring to camp anyways. Also this year we are encouraging campers to bring a chair to sit around the fire! I know the benches are cool and everything, but come on, a camp chair is way more comfortable! So bring them with you, not only for our camping trip to Shades, but to use around the fire at the cabins as well!

If you have any questions feel free to contact Todd at toddblair@hangingrock.org and he will be able to answer them for you. We are excited for this new adventure for our Junior and Senior High Wilderness campers!

It’s tough, but good to be the new guy…

Hello, my name is Drake Burger and I am the “new” guy here at Hanging Rock. I say new but this is actually my 19th year in a row at the camp in some capacity. I was a camper for 14 years, a volunteer for 2, and now a staff member for two in different fashions. Each month I will be filling you in on our programming, upcoming events, basically all of the fun stuff that is going on at camp these days. But first, a little about me and what my experience at camp has been like. I started working as the Associate Director in August of 2017. I am recently married to a stunning woman named Kelly, and we have moved into one of the apartments here on camp property. We are currently in the middle of a renovation on our kitchen, or actually more of a building project because we have no kitchen…yet. We have felt so blessed with the support we have from family, friends, and camp staff. Even though I would consider our situation preferable, it is always hard coming in as the new guy in a ministry that is built so heavily on relationships. I am trying to work my way around to all of our ministers and form relationships with our churches, so expect me to contact you in the near future. Camp has been a wonderful, and uplifting place to work, and I am excited for everything that the Lord has in store for me here. God has truly blessed this camp, and the people who support it, so thank you, and I hope to see you this summer! Sign up now and get our early bird discount for all summer camps!
