Nature Is a Wonderful Teacher
Nature is the most wonderful teacher.
This week, our first graders are preparing for their field trip to the Zoo by studing animal habitats and adaptations. Young Scientists paid a visit to first grade and delighted our students with animal facts and stories. The highlight was a visit by some live animal friends, a turtle and two sugar gliders. (Sugar gliders are marsupials from Australia and are in the same family as the Koala.)
Our fourth graders are starting their year-long study of plants by observing characteristics of different types of plants on our campus and keeping observation journals. These studies will lead up to the planting and harvesting of the fourth grade garden.

Have you seen the new Middle School greenhouse? This greenhouse will be used for Middle School science experiments and their study of earth science. Our seventh graders are also planting food crops in it and over the year, have to maintain their plots to see what variables grow the most food. The garden beds will utilize compost made from food waste from Middle School lunch.

Our eighth graders returned on Friday from a fabulous two-day camping trip (a St M tradition) to Camp Westview on the James that was filled with team-building exercises, fellowship, self-discovery and connection to the natural world.

Lower School Birthday Books

Birthday books, a long-standing St M tradition, offers students a way to present a favorite book to the library in honor of their birthdays, in honor of someone special such as a teacher or sibling, or in memory of a loved one. A bookplate is placed in the front of the book with the name of the donor and the occasion for which the book was presented. Children presenting the books have the special honor of being the first person to check that book out of the library. There are three different Birthday Book programs during the school year.

The deadline for submitting Birthday Books for the October 13th program is September 28th.

Mrs. Wise has a selection of new books in the library from which to choose.  Please feel free to email her (cwise@stmschool.net)  if you have any questions.
