We hope you have a good start to the Spring semester! We are writing to provide you with some reminders and updates.
Visa expirations
Please review departmental records to identify any scholars in your department whose visa statuses will be expiring in the next six-eight months, or those scholars that may require a change to a different visa status.
If you plan to extend a scholar’s appointment or have a scholar changing their visa status, please submit a
request form to
ogs.scholars@nyu.edu. OGS will review the request, and start the process to extend the scholar’s visa status.
Lead times for visa sponsorship requests
Please continue to review the
timelines posted on the Scholar Services website. Due to the high volume of requests received, please adhere to these timelines when submitting requests and documents. Requests received outside of the posted timelines will be considered last minute requests. OGS cannot guarantee that last minute requests will be processed and approved by the requested start date. In those cases, we will provide an updated reasonable start date or advise that the case be referred to outside legal counsel.
J funding requirements
For scholars with effective start dates on or after June 1, the J-1 funding requirements will be raised slightly, to the following amounts:
- $2,500/month for a J-1 Scholar
- $900/month for a J-2 Spouse
- $500/month for each J-2 Child
- J-1 Student Interns: the minimum will remain the same ($500/week or $2,000/month)
These amounts will be reflected on request forms as of March 1, which takes into account the standard 3-month lead time for J-1 requests. Please be sure you are always using the most up-to-date version of the DS-2019 Request Form by downloading a “fresh” copy from the
Visa Sponsorship Request Forms web page for each submission.
Scholars traveling internationally
As throughout the pandemic, international travel remains risky and requirements/restrictions can change with little notice. If any scholars mention international travel plans to you, please continue to refer them to
ogs.scholars@nyu.edu for advice.
