If Everyone Wore Clothes, Wouldn't You?

July 2, 2016
By Ann Seacrest, RN, IBCLC, Executive Director of MilkWorks
Creating a supportive environment for breastfeeding mothers sounds so easy. Doctors and midwives encourage moms to take a breastfeeding class. In the hospital, the nurses promote newborn skin to skin contact. Moms may seek outpatient breastfeeding support from an IBCLC. Most insurance plans provide a breast pump so breastfeeding moms can return to work or school. We even have legislation that makes breastfeeding in public a civil right.

Then a new mom leaves her house with her baby and breastfeeding is nowhere to be seen ...

Thanks for Celebrating With Us!

Thank you to everyone who supported our 15th Birthday Party and MilkWalk celebration on Sunday, June 12! It was a steamy Nebraska summer day, which made the popcicles and ice cream taste even better! Check out our website and facebook for more photos from the day.

Welcome New CBEs

MilkWorks welcomes eleven new culturally diverse Community Breastfeeding Educators to our community. Watch for them in our neighborhoods as they provide support and education for breastfeeding mothers.

Meet MilkBaby Alyssa and her mom Jade!

Jade came to MilkWorks in 2005 with her daughter Alyssa. She was having trouble getting Alyssa to latch and her doctor told her about MilkWorks. Now, Alyssa loves school and hopes to be a vet when she grows up!

Breastfeeding During the Summer Heat

We’ve already had some HOT days this summer! It’s important for you AND your baby to stay hydrated. Drinking  water is critical for general hydration, so when the temperature rises, don’t leave home without a water bottle. However, exclusively breastfed babies do not require additional water, even when it is very hot outside. As long as you stay hydrated and breastfeed often, your baby will get all the fluids he or she needs.

MilkWorks O Provides Worksite Support

With the support of a grant that WELLCOM received from the Nebraska Department of Health & Human Services, MilkWorks O recently provided IBCLC worksite consultations to five Omaha employers. These consultations help assure that employers are familiar with laws and regulations designed to protect breastfeeding mothers in the workplace and that employees are set up for success while pumping. Thank you, WELLCOM for trusting us to provide these valuable consultations!

MilkWorks O SIDEWALK SALE

MilkWorks O is participating in the annual Rockbrook Village Sidewalk Sale. Come check out some great deals and enjoy a sweet treat while you’re here. And don’t forget, we always have a comfortable place for you to breastfeed your baby and our free weigh station is always open!

Both MilkWorks locations have weekly moms' groups and IBCLC consultations designed to support you and your baby and your breastfeeding journey. Did you know that we also offer support through our Facebook groups? They are all closed groups, so search the following to be added: MilkWorks Return to Work Moms, MilkWorks Food Sensitivities and Intolerances, MilkWorks Multiples.

Leading the Way for Healthier Kids

Katie Bossy, a member of the Ponca Tribe of Nebraska, was recently honored as one of Washington, D.C.’s Top Lawyers Under 40. Katie is also active nationally in the Notah Begay III Foundation, a national organization dedicated to reversing obesity and type II diabetes in Native American children, and was featured breastfeeding her son as part of the Women Infant and Children (WIC) food supplement diversity photo campaign.

Read All About It

Research shows that reading aloud is the single most important thing you can do to help a child prepare for a lifetime of reading and learning. Reading for just 15 minutes a day is enough to make an impact, and what better way to get them started off on the right foot than with a book from our adorable collection. We have new books and some old favorites!

Make sure to follow babyworks on instagram @babyworks_lnk and on facebook @babyworks to stay in the know!

Happy Fourth of July!

(Both MilkWorks locations are closed July 4th)
