Matthew 6:19-21
Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.   But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.  For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
New International Version (NIV)
Has your ATM ever sent you a handwritten note?  Last week a repairman accidentally locked himself in the chamber behind an ATM in Corpus Christi.  Without his cell phone he had no way to call for help.  So, he slipped notes through the ATM slot to people who were using it.  Some thought it was a joke, but one called it in and he was rescued from the ATM.
What would people from the first century think about putting a card in a machine and receiving money?  Where did they keep their money?  Sometimes they buried it in the ground to keep marauders from taking it.  Jesus had much to say about where we should store our treasures.  Have you notice how relentless thieves can be?  Not to mention moths!
Heaven is the safest place of all to put the things we value.  Why?  We can't lose them there.  But how do we store treasures in heaven.  Hearses never have U-Hauls behind them (though I have been tempted to try it just for the illustrative value).  What if the only thing we really keep is what we give away?  What if our giving to others gives them such joy that they praise God because of our kindness.  Treasure transferred.  In heaven, giving God greater glory is best of all.  One last word:  wherever we keep our treasure, on earth or heaven, there our hearts will be.
 Pray with me:
Father, as we think about our treasures, help us to think first of you.  Be our treasure today.  Fix our hearts and minds on you first.  As we seek you first and you add everything we need, help us not to try to hoard your blessings.   Show us our hearts today.  Whatever you give us or whatever we lose today, show us that you are the only One who is indispensable.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
I want to invite you to join me in memorizing 52 passages this year from the 2017 set of Fighter Verses.  You can find the Fighter Verses App at the App Store on your phones or via this link  http://fighterverses.com/the-verses/fighter-verses/As we study the Bible this year, let's look at each text and learn what it says about God.
