Abram became a father at the age of 86. Still, God's promise to him remained largely unfulfilled. Thirteen years later, the Lord appeared to him again. God renewed his covenant with Abram, changing his name to Abraham which means "father of many nations." Abraham's responsibility would be to walk before God faithfully and blamelessly. God would greatly increase his numbers.
Covenants often require something from both parties. God promised to perform the miracle of giving Abraham many descendants. Abraham needed to live a faithful life before the Lord.
What has God promised you? We may be certain that God will keep his promises to us. He also requires of us that we walk in faithfulness and blamelessness before him. How are we doing? Faith leads to faithfulness. We can never talk behind God's back. Everything we say and do is "before him." Trust leads to trustworthiness.
Our testimony is never safe until we get home. Many of God's people failed him in the second half of their lives. I once heard a Christian statesman describe another who had made a mess of things, "It doesn't take much to tarnish a legacy."
What shall we do? Let's walk before the Lord today with an awareness of his presence. All of us can be faithful to God. We can choose to be blameless before him today. Repent of sin. Receive forgiveness. God will fulfill his promises to us. It is never too late for us because God is never late.
