Community Freedom Summit and Freedom Walk |
Walsh University and Not For Sale: One Step At A Time are joining forces for the fifth straight year in the fight against human trafficking by hosting the annual Community Freedom Summit and one-mile silent Freedom Walk. This year’s event will take place Saturday, September 30, from 10 a.m.-12 p.m., and will focus on the topic of sextortion. Sextortion is when an adult pretends to be the same age as a younger victim to get them to share explicit photos or videos of themselves on camera and then immediately starts demanding money. Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost will deliver the keynote on the Human Trafficking Initiative he created to build awareness of the problem and empower Ohioans to act. Streetsboro residents Tamia and Tim Woods, with the Do it for James Foundation, are coming to share their personal testimony on behalf of their son who committed suicide after being sextorted. Walsh University students from the DPT, MOT, and Graduate Education programs recently offered an interdisciplinary kindergarten screening program for the local community. This event provided families with an opportunity to learn about developmental activities and an assessment of their child's skills as they prepare for school. Students had the opportunity to apply their classroom knowledge to real life experiences. A great day for all!

This summer, the Fast Track Nursing Students completed a Service-Learning Project with Lighthouse Ministries Summer Camp. The student groups were assigned the task of developing a lesson on health snacks using basic ingredients that the children would have at home or were being grown in the Lighthouse Garden. Students completed a total of six lessons on healthy snacks, including proper cleaning, refrigeration, and other food safety measures. The lessons were given during the campers "Art" class - so in addition to determining the snack, the nursing students had to come up with a creative way to plate. The final products included a fruit rainbow, banana penguin, and frozen yogurt among others. The projects were well received by all members of Lighthouse, including parents who felt the take home materials were very helpful. This is the second time Walsh Nursing Students have partnered with Lighthouse Ministries and look forward to their upcoming partnership in the Fall.
