Ambassador Tomita visits Portland

On March 24, Ambassador of Japan to the United States Tomita Koji visited Portland. He met with Governor Brown, visited the Japanese American Historical Plaza with cherry blossoms in full bloom, and viewed exhibits at the Japanese American Museum of Oregon with representatives of the Japanese American community. He also toured the Rivergate Industrial District which is a major gateway for trade between Oregon and Japan.

Online event "Lessons from a Super-Aging Society ~Japan's Smart Approach to the "100-year Life""
The online event was held on March 16, and participants included both local residents and those from as far away as Chicago and Hawaii. Professor Akiyama gave a presentation on the current situation and measures taken to address Japan's aging society. Her talk was followed by a panel discussion.

Ms. Doris Hrubant (Sahomi Tachibana)'s dance legacy tribute
On March 3 2022, an online tribute event was held to honor Ms. Doris Hrubant (Sahomi Tachibana)'s long career of wonderful dance performances over the years. About 250 people attended this virtual event. Ms. Hrubant is the recipient of the Order of the Rising Sun, Silver Rays in Spring, 2021.Below is the website link where you can find a video from the event.

PSU MAINSTAGE KABUKI, 2022: THE SARDINE SELLER’S NET OF LOVE
When: May 25 – 27, 7 p.m. and May 28, 2 p.m. (PT)
Where: Portland State University, Lincoln Performance Hall
This romantic comedy, set in Kyoto in 1700, is the most popular kabuki play written by the brilliant and multi-talented Yukio Mishima. This production was a big hit when it premiered in 2010 presented by Willamette University, under Dr. Kominz’ direction.

Exhibition: Na Omi Judy Shintani: Dream Refuge for Children Imprisoned
When: April 14 –September 4
Where: JAPANESE AMERICAN MUSEUM OF OREGON, Portland
This installation explores the trauma of children taken from communities that were denied their culture, such as Japanese American children incarcerated in American concentration camps during World War II.

Exhibition: Art of Vitality: Peter Shinbach Bamboo Art Collection
When: Exhibition to be held through April 17
Where: PORTLAND JAPANESE GARDEN, Portland
This exhibition presents Portland resident, Peter Shinbache's newest acquisitions including works by some of the most revered names in Japanese bamboo art: Maeda Chikubosai I, Kibe Seiho, and Honda Syoryu.

Lecture: FUJI: THE MAKING OF A GLOBAL MOUNTAIN
When: April 27, 6 -7:30 p.m. (PT)

This talk will discuss how Japan's premier mountain became an especially potent, multi-faceted, and far-reaching contributor to the physical and imagined worlds in which we live. This lecture is hosted by Center for Japanese Studies, PSU.
