The March-April 2025 CA HAB Bulletin is now available! This bulletin summarizes a major domoic acid (DA) event, the beginning of which was captured in a previous edition. The ecological impacts observed have surpassed those of the past four years, with toxins affecting CA sea lions and other pinnipeds, dolphins, sea birds, larger cetaceans, and producing multiple seafood advisories.

SCCOOS is monitoring an ongoing DA + PSP Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) in the Southern California region, and has developed a two-page informational poster to explain the science of HAB observing.

🐚 Shellfish Advisories: The California Department of Public Health has issued a set of Shellfish Harvesting Advisories for Santa Barbara, Los Angeles, and San Diego counties due to the risk of illness from consuming sport-harvested mussels, clams, scallops, and oysters in these areas.

🐟 Sardine Advisory: CDFW has issued a closure for the take of commercial and recreational sardines for human consumption from Pt. Conception to the US/Mexico border.
