Back to School Edition!

It's been a long, hot, and smoke-filled summer for British Columbia. With the wildfire situation in our province this year, I don't think any of us have been more eager to see the return of rain. The season of horse blankets and gumboots is coming, and we join our friends across BC in welcoming a much-needed change in the weather.
With the impending arrival of fall, kids are going back to school and CTRA is getting back into the swing of things. We're welcoming a full fall roster after a summer of successful horse camps. It's been a busy, productive summer and we're excited to get back to class!

Jumpstart Funding: A How-To

What is the Jumpstart Program?
Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities is a registered charity (#1379 29 451 RR0002) dedicated to removing financial barriers so kids across Canada have the opportunity to get off the sidelines and get into the game.”
Jumpstart funding can be used towards a wide variety of sports and physical activities (including CTRA's program).
Jumpstart offers funding to families with children aged 4-18 that meet their low-income criteria.
To determine eligibility, Jumpstart uses Revenue Canada’s Low Income Cut-offs (LICOs) which are published by Statistics Canada.
These are available here
To use the Stats Can Chart:
  • Find the size of the family unit down the left-hand side.
  • Find the community size across the top.
Where the column and row meet is the LICO for that family unit size in the community.
To prove eligibility, applicants will have to upload an income assessment, prior year T4 statement, or three consecutive pay stubs at the time of application – this information is kept confidential.
How much funding can we get?
There are two primary pots of funding that low-income families can access:
1) The Big Play (released for a limited time each year) which provides $500/year for 3 years to get kids involved in minor hockey
2) The regular program (accepts applications “year round” - Jan 15 – Nov 1) which provides up to $300/eligible activity.
Both programs have an annual maximum of $600/child/year.
Note: these are maximums and the amount awarded is subject to chapter discretion and local demands.
What can this funding be used for?
Jumpstart funds can be used towards registration costs, transportation costs, or equipment necessary to the sport (vouchers are provided).
Eligible sports/activities are listed here
Note: If your sport/activity is not already listed, families will be prompted to contact their local Community Partner to see if Jumpstart funding can be used.
Eligible sport/activity programs must run a minimum of five weeks in duration and at a minimum of one session per week. In the case of camps, a duration of one week with five consecutive days in session is acceptable.
What do we need to know to apply?
Learn more about this program (and others) on CTRA's financial aid page.
Recent Update: Families are now able to submit a paper application to their approved service provider. A hardcopy of the application is available for printing here or can be picked up from CTRA's office.

Funder Feature: The Sisters of St.Ann

The Sisters of St. Ann are a long-time supporter of CTRA with a legacy on Providence Farm (the site of CTRA's facility).

Having first settled the farm site in 1864, the Sisters played an important role in establishing the Vancouver Island Providence Community Association - or VIPCA -  in 1979 (in fact: the "Providence" part of the name comes from Sister Mary Providence).

VIPCA has provided therapeutic programs on Providence Farm since the 1980's. CTRA was one of the first programs invited to become a tenant on the farm in the late 1980s.

The Sisters formally gifted the land and infrastructure to the VIPCA in 2009 (as part of the farm's 30th-anniversary celebrations). While VIPCA and CTRA are both secular organizations with no direct affiliation with the Catholic church, it is thanks to The Sisters of St. Ann that we are able to call beautiful Providence Farm our home.

VIPCA and CTRA are entirely separate entities but our two organizations operate in close partnership and enjoy the kind of deep symbiosis that only comes with sharing space on a working farm. (For example: did you know that the manure from CTRA's horses goes to VIPCA's horticultural program?)

The Sisters continue to support our work to this day. In addition to numerous donations over the years, a generous gift in 2015 helped us to finish our outdoor riding arena - enabling us to expand our program significantly.

This year, a grant from Sisters of Saint Ann - Esther's Dream Fund through The Victoria Foundation will ensure that the Sister's legacy of service continues through CTRA's therapeutic riding and equine-based wellness services.

Providence Farm (including CTRA's facility) is open to the public during operating hours (9-4 daily). We encourage you to come and visit this important place of history and become part our future!

Our Family Lounge is Open!

At long last, our family lounge in the newly renovated "Piggery" building is open and ready for use! Just in time for the cool fall weather...

Come check out this new (heated) space with ample seating and an excellent view of the arena!
This room is reserved for families and visitors that would like to watch the lessons, catch up on work, or just socialize in a cozy, welcoming environment. Pull up a seat and enjoy!

The "Fair" Days of Summer

Isabella Dale shows off her talents on CTRA therapy horse "Leo"
If you visited the Saanich Fall Fair this year, you may have seen CTRA's adapted equestrian vaulting team in action! Team members collaborated with vaulters from Victoria's Manestream Vaulting Club to offer fair-goers a demonstration of the sport and art that is equestrian vaulting
The team is back at it this weekend at the Cowichan Exhibition!
Come check out the demonstration at 11am and 4:30pm on Saturday September 9 - and while you're there, check out CTRA's Jane James Used Tack Shop on site at the Fair (and use the coupon below for some great deals!)

Horse Sponsors Needed

Jim Tyson of Investors Group with sponsored horse "Surya" and Assistant Stable Manager Gloria Edmondson
What do the Malahat Lions Club, The Ladysmith Health Care Auxiliary, Island Savings, and Investors Group all have in common?
These organizations all sponsored a CTRA therapy horse in 2017!
Sponsoring a CTRA therapy horse is a great way to get your family or business involved in a great cause.
Sponsors cover the costs to feed and care for a therapy horse of their choosing, making sure these very special animals have everything they need to do their very important jobs.
To learn more about becoming a CTRA horse sponsor, email info@ctra.ca or call 250-746-1028.

CTRA horse "Leo" wins "Therapy Horse of the Year!"

CTRA rider Naomi Nickolichuk congratulates Leo on his success
The Canadian Therapeutic Riding Association is the national governing body for therapeutic riding. Every year, CanTRA awards outstanding volunteers, Instructors, administrators, and therapy horses for excellence in the field.
CTRA is over the moon to announce that our own Leo (sponsored by the Malahat Lion Club) received this year's distinction as horse of the year. You can read all about the 2017 CanTRA awards, including Leo's accomplishments, by following this link.
Did we mention that Leo also won CTRA's Horse of the Year Award? That's right - our special unicorn pulled a legendary "two-for" this year, earning both titles and a place in therapy horse history!

Consider a monthly donation for maximum impact!

Monthly donations are one of the best ways to support CTRA. Even a small amount ($5/month) makes a big difference.
Monthly contributions allow CTRA to plan for the future and achieve greater sustainability. They are also a great option for busy donors - just set it and forget it!
Monthly donations to CTRA can be set up and managed directly online through our Canada Helps account OR through our office. Canada Helps donations for any amount will receive a tax receipt, whereas direct donations (through CTRA's office) must be an annual aggregate value of $25 or more to qualify for a tax receipt.
If you would like more information on setting up a monthly contribution, please contact us
