| WEEKLY WORDS TO PONDER
“I can walk into a bookshop and point out a number of books that I find very unattractive in what they say. But it doesn’t occur to me to burn the bookshop down. If you don’t like a book, read another book.”
—Salman Rushdie, award-winning, Indian-born British American novelist and fellow of the British Royal Society of Literature (Learn more about him)

IUP Values Me
Milady is pursuing a degree in political science/pre-law, with a projected graduation year of 2024. She is a member of the Cook Honors College and is both a Promising Scholar and a Sutton Scholar. Milady is on the executive board of the IUP Ambassadors and serves as the group’s Communications Committee chair. She is vice president of the Latino Student Organization (LaSO). In these organizations, she informs the student body of diversity, equity, and inclusion events and opportunities here on campus. In her role with LaSO, she strives to increase awareness of the Latine community at IUP. Milady initiated the LaSO Para la Cultura (“for the culture”) Series, a movement/series that encourages difficult conversations with the Latine community about topics such as colorism. It also encourages group members to embrace their “Latinidad.” She is currently assisting LaSO and the Office of Admissions with a Latino Exploration Day/Weekend. We thank you, Milady!
Theresa is the Government Information/Outreach librarian and serves as a Reflective Practice codirector for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning. In these roles, she supports instruction and programs that encourage everyone to feel welcome and supported in their efforts to discover old knowledge and to create and share new knowledge. This includes collaborating with other university groups on diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives. It also involves promoting the use of free Open Educational Resources for classes and the use of reserve books to reduce students’ cost of education. She supports programs during Banned Books Week (see events happening this week). As the national celebration’s motto suggests, “Books bring people together. Censorship divides them.” We thank you, Theresa!
A note about IUP Values Me: Each week, we will highlight one student and one staff member to “shine a spotlight” on their great work assisting our campus community with diversity, equity, and inclusion and/or civil rights awareness. If you have a suggestion for an IUP community member to feature in this section, please email social-equity@iup.edu.
