On the Beat: Sports Journalism |
This fall, the Missouri Method is taking sports journalism students from the sidelines to the studio, giving them professional, hands-on experience across multiple platforms. The return of the MU-kU rivalry brought extra energy and welcomed alumni back to campus. Amid the excitement around MU athletics, we pause to remember the late Ben Arnet, BJ ’03, KOMU sports director and J-School faculty member, whose dedication to mentorship and the craft continues to inspire generations of students and alumni.

This month, we're celebrating 117 years since the Missouri School of Journalism opened its doors, the first of its kind in the world. To honor our legacy, alumni are making gifts of $19.08 to the Missouri Method Endowment, a nod to our founding year. Your support sustains the hands-on training that prepares students to report, create and lead with integrity. Make your gift today and help carry the mission forward.

The Missouri School of Journalism’s community reporting footprint is expanding. The Missourian Publishing Association — which operates the Columbia Missourian — has purchased the Boone County Journal, a weekly newspaper serving audiences in Ashland and Hartsburg in print and online. The purchase will allow the Missourian to devote reporting resources to informing these mid-Missouri communities while offering new hands-on learning opportunities for students.

Senior Rory Whetstone realized a childhood dream this summer when she landed an internship at MLB Network, gaining experience at the heart of the operation on the news production and assignment desk. As an important stepping stone toward her goal of becoming an MLB team reporter, she received mentorship from star sportscasters and leaned on her J-School training to navigate the fast-paced world of live broadcasting.
