Dear Members of our St. Matthew’s Church and School Community,
We are writing to provide you with a comprehensive update on the ongoing debris removal and remediation efforts following the fire damage to our beloved campus. Your patience and continued support during this challenging time have been invaluable, and our goal is to continue to keep you informed at pivotal milestones along our path to full recovery.

Earlier this month, Terry Bird and Rev. Bruce A. Freeman spoke at a parish gathering about St. Matthew’s Fire Recovery efforts. A recording of the full conversation is available here.
Saints Alive: Return to Bienveneda Update
Below is a detailed description of the work that is currently underway as we continue to maintain a strong pace forward towards our return goals.
Army Corps of Engineers Debris Removal
The Army Corps of Engineers has nearly completed their cleanup of the school structures most severely damaged by the fires.
Director of Facilities, Tyler Dituri, and the Chair of our Return to Bienveneda Committee, Terry Bird, coordinated closely with the Army's efforts under the leadership of Colonel Pallazzini, whose regular presence on campus led to a swift and successful cleanup. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to FEMA and the Army Corps of Engineers for their invaluable assistance.
SMPS Remediation Church Remediation
Remediation Progress, Specialized Restoration Efforts, and Insurance Coverage
To complement the work of our two industrial hygienists, we selected Anderson Group International (AGI) to lead the remediation of our church, Sprague building, and more than 14 standing parish and school structures. Anderson brings an exceptional track record of successfully remediating prominent churches and schools nationwide, combining the necessary expertise with substantial resources to manage this multi-million dollar undertaking. Their deep familiarity with insurance processes will be particularly valuable as we work with our carrier for reimbursement, and our adjuster, Sill, was actively involved in the selection process and fully endorsed this choice. AGI began active remediation operations at the Church site on June 23. The project is being executed by a dedicated team consisting of more than 30 qualified technicians and supervisors.
Anderson has already established their presence on campus, positioning large headquarters trailers in the parking lot. Our Project Manager, Gardiner & Theobold, is serving as our primary point of contact and weekly meetings are scheduled to ensure full coordination and productivity throughout the process.
We have also engaged specialized subcontractors to carefully remediate our church's organ and other valuable musical instruments. Dwayne Milburn, Director of Music at the Parish and the Music Guild Director, is leading these delicate restoration efforts to ensure these treasured elements of our worship experience are properly preserved and restored.
The Joint Vestry/Board committee, Falcons Forward, dedicated to the preparation of temporary school structures for our Fall 2026 return is actively engaged in the remediation process and working to ensure that our students can return to campus seamlessly.
Our adjuster, Sill, continues to work actively with our insurance carrier to ensure that all remediation costs will be covered under our existing policies for each damaged structure.
We are encouraged by the quality of professionals now working to restore our sacred spaces and educational facilities, and we thank you for your continued prayers, support, and understanding during this restoration period. We will continue to provide regular updates as this important work progresses. Please reach out with questions or concerns.
In Faith and Gratitude,
