“What’s the point?” Do you ever ask that question?

Galatians 6:9-10
Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.
New International Version (NIV)
“What’s the point?”  Do you ever ask that question?  Why keep on trying to serve the Lord when the world seems to continue its downward spiral.  The societal regression in our lifetime has been precipitous.  The harder we try, the worse the world around us seems to get.  Perhaps in our own lives we have known great trouble, even though we served the Lord faithfully.
Paul surely understood by experience how difficult serving the Lord could be.  He invested a lot of love in the Galatians only to see them return to a distorted false gospel of legalism.  He wondered if he had completely wasted his time.  Then, at the end of his letter, he preached to himself as he preached to the Galatians by saying, “Let us not grow weary . . .”  They were in it together.  Best of all God promised a harvest at the proper time.  What if we quit right before the blessing came?
Today you will have opportunity to do the right thing.  Nobody but God may even notice.  Good news:  he notices.  He is always working among us.  Think of some fellow Christian who needs your encouragement today.  Give it freely!  It will come back in waves when you least expect it and most need it.  We are not alone in our work for the Lord.  We are part of a family.  All of us have put our trust in God.  “He will not fail.  He must prevail.  Have faith in God.  Have faith in God!”
Pray with me:
Father, we confess that we are sometimes weary and burdened.  So we accept your invitation to come to you and learn from you today.  Remind us that you are the Lord of the harvest.  Help us to plant good seeds today with full confidence that at the proper time you will bring in a great harvest.  Show us someone whom we may serve today.  Thank you for welcoming us into your family by faith.  Help us to love each other well.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
