Do we believe God? I don’t mean, “Do we believe in God?” But do we trust him? One of my childhood pastors asked in a prayer meeting, “How were people in the Old Testament saved?” Was it by their good works or keeping the law? Raymond Franklin answered his own question, “They were saved the same way you and I are: by faith.”
Abram had just reminded the Lord of his promises. The Lord assured him that he would keep his promises. With no evidence at all, except God’s word, Abraham believed the Lord. This single act of faith resulted in God crediting Abram with righteousness. Abram was made right with God when he trusted him. In the New Testament, James quoted this passage and then said, “Abraham was called a friend of God." (James 2:23).
When we were praying for revival at Tallowood a few years ago, a pastor friend asked me at the gym, “What are you believing God for in this revival?” Great question. Abram believed God would bless him and make him a blessing through descendants as numerous as the stars. Do we believe God could bring a great harvest of souls into his church this holy week? Do we take God at his word? When Bartimaeus asked Jesus to give him sight, Jesus gave even more, “Your faith has healed you” (Mark 10:52).
I remember my mom singing the old hymn: “Only trust him, only trust him, only trust him now. He will save you, he will save you, he will save you now.” She was right. Mom believed God and he credited to her as righteousness. Then he saved all four of her sons. This is the way, the only way we are saved. By all means, walk this Way.
