SARA ANGER, STUDENT SERVICES SPECIALIST

Sara Anger

UW-Stout Online Student Services Specialist
How long have you worked for Stout Online,
and the university in general?
I have been a part of the Stout Online team for 2.5 years; however, I have been with the university since 2000. I am also a proud alumna of the university, both as an undergraduate and graduate.

I am no stranger to online learning  as an online student, I balanced a career, young family and time for myself.
What is your role in Stout Online?
My role is to listen to students’ goals, help map their success plan, tackle obstacles and provide resources to support their journey to a desirable outcome. In addition, I assist program directors with programmatic tasks and maintain retention data.
What do you like most about working with the online programs?
The students are what I like about my job. They are genuine in their appreciation of my help. I also love the diversity my position affords me, from the students’ backgrounds to the array of projects I may do.
What place in the U.S. would you most like to visit and why?
New York City. I think it would be awesome to tour New York’s five boroughs on foot as a runner in the largest marathon in the world. Following the race, I would definitely need a few extra days to visit all the traditional tourist places.
List five goals on your life’s to-do list.
  1. Challenge myself and step out of my comfort zone
  2. Slow down and keep perspective
  3. Make a difference in someone’s life
  4. Keep it simple and enjoy life
  5. Travel – see the world
What is one of your favorite quotes?
“Strength doesn’t come from what you can do. It comes from overcoming the things you once thought you couldn’t.”  ~Rikki Rogers
If you could give the world one piece of advice, what would it be?
For students beginning an online program, be realistic with yourself, no one is a superhero. It is incredibly helpful to create a schedule to maintain your sanity with classes, work, family and you time.

Getting Started with Online Classroom “Flips”
Here are 10 recommendations for flipping instruction in the online environment.
  1. Create an activity that is authentic to the discipline studied.
  2. Take a project-based learning approach to the “flipped” activity.
  3. Develop a management plan on the front-end of the activity, sharing it with students upon delivery.
  4. Select a media platform that is both accessible and engaging.
  5. Make the instruction learner-centered to encourage student control over the learning process, peer-peer collaboration, and the opportunity to individually reflect.
  6. Storyboard the activity’s media component before recording.
  7. Include text alternatives to audio (transcript) and video (captions) activity components.
  8. Use active learning instructional methods in the follow-up activity exercise(s).
  9. Include an activity rubric(s), so students know how they will be assessed.
  10. Pilot a single “flipped” activity before fully integrating the strategy into your course.
