GREETINGS ALUMNI!

We hope that you enjoyed your February break!

DCPS Study Abroad is currently preparing for our first Pre-departure Meeting for this year's travelers. On March 5th, all accepted students will be meeting their Travel Ambassadors and their trip mates for the first time. The DCPS Study Abroad Alumni Fellows will also be there to answer questions and to share about their experiences. Are you interested in sharing about your DCPS Study Abroad travels? Drop us a line to find out more how you can help support the program!

Isaac Saunders visited Peru summer of 2018. He currently attends Duke Ellington
School of the Arts.

Why did you decide to apply for DCPS Study Abroad?
I applied because it was a free trip to another country if you got accepted, and I
figured it would be a really cool experience, one I couldn’t get at this age anywhere else.

What was your favorite part of you Study Abroad Experience?
It was so fun to see what another country looked like. I loved shopping in the
markets, I actually still use a fanny pack I bought in Peru. I really loved hanging out with llamas as well, I never would have ever seen an animal like that if I hadn’t been able to do Study Abroad. Even things I thought I knew, like soda, tasted better there!

Why do you feel studying abroad is so important for students your age?
I think it’s important to have a broader understanding of the world, something you
can only do by seeing the world for yourself. You need to learn about other people,
places, and people from around the world, so you don’t just have a single world view. I want to have multiple stories in my life, and Peru is now one of my stories.

How has the trip impacted you and your daily life?
I’m definitely more open to trying new things now that I’m back. I tried so many
new foods and new things in general in Peru, I feel like I’m a lot more confident in
my daily life here in America, and more sure of myself in general.

What did u do your Making Global Local Project on?
I created a project on the importance of looking after your environment and
preserving it. I focused on how other countries aren’t always given the resources that many people in the United States already have, and how this impacts the people and their environment.
