What is Heaven like? People who claim to have been there sell so many books. I confess I am skeptical of these writers. Often their accounts contradict scripture.
John actually went to Heaven and then wrote this book of Revelation. After he delivered the mail from Jesus to the seven churches, the familiar voice summoned John up higher. Obediently the elder John walked through an open door and saw wonders. Then he described his glimpse of heaven for us. Like Howard Carter, the man who discovered Tut’s tomb said, “I see wonderful things.”
It turns out, Heaven has a throne room. Just as Isaiah saw and wrote in his book about seeing the King, John says he saw Someone seated on a throne. Like the angels in Isaiah 6, John’s four living creatures had six wings each and they recited the holiness of eternal God. Every time the creatures shouted out God’s holiness, the twenty-four elders cast their crowns at the feet of Jesus.
If we could step into Heaven we would see, hear, and feel unimaginable things. Apparently, Heaven offers multi-sensory engagement. We would see the King on his throne. We would hear angels and elders praising God for his creation. What will we do when this happens to us? We will bow in worship. All our accolades and achievements will be placed before our King.
Driving my dad to dinner this week, he played a beautiful country song about Heaven. As I write, I can hear my dad’s bass voice singing expectantly with the CD, "I have never bowed before a king . . . I have never heard an angel sing . . . But I will, someday!” So will I, Dad. How about you, friend? Will you too? We will join the angels’ chorus and sing something like, “Oh worship the King, all glorious above, and joyfully sing, his power and his love!”
