August 14, 2023
Greetings, friends in the DFPA community:
Before summer draws to a close and we find ourselves fully immersed in classes, jobs, papers, pieces, songs and scenes, please take a moment to reflect a bit on the outside world we want to bring back with us to Loyola, events of the summer, and any new areas of focus and inquiry we might take on in our year’s planning (or NEXT year’s planning, in the ongoing cycle that we’ll inevitably begin soon...)
This summer I’ve been most struck by two particular things—the increase of the level of intensity and frequency of crises in weather and atmospheric conditions clearly reflective of climate change, and the multiple locations of crisis created by inhumane management of immigrant populations both at the border and in Chicago. Those two issues rose to the surface over the summer, sometimes eclipsing our prior and continued attempts to focus on public health needs and identity/race-based inequities. All this joins the wealth of material we can/should address with our art. All this, plus NASCAR, Barbie and Oppenheimer too.
The Mundelein Center for the Fine and Performing Arts was surrounded by spider-like cranes and lifts, and suspended lift platforms performing repairs to the granite facing the building through most of the summer—repairs to the main stairs on the South entrance are in process, as are substantial landscaping renovations to the plaza on the East of the building. Inside, we’ve been configuring classroom and office spaces, preparing for some newly re-visioned facilities in Fine Arts, and preparing to pursue inclusion in the Campus Master Plan our plans to renovate Rooney Hall.
Last year wound up being a year of re-staffing, replacing and re-aligning faculty into new or different positions—tremendous efforts expended by multiple search committees crossing over all disciplines. We also were able to respond and react to information in the Academic Program Review cycle, poising us now to most effectively develop and implement our next DFPA strategic plan, with a somewhat refreshed and renewed commitment from the College of Arts and Sciences to understand and appreciate the idiosyncratic nature of the arts. Now that we’re able to approach a year with the kind of faculty support of our programs and curricula that we need, I look forward to the re-constitution of our DFPA community, including all the new and returning faces.
Welcome, welcome back, and all my fondest wishes for a GREAT start to the semester.

Saturday, September 16 | 7:30PM CT
Skowronski Music Hall
Tickets: $5
Life is a Cabaret explores the emotional journeys of young women (though applicable to any gender) through popular musical theater songs. The show takes on a cabaret-like structure with added dialogue, monologues, and choreography. As the show progresses, the audience gains an understanding of the relatability of musical theater in the modern era, specifically how this genre of music is applicable to everyone's own story, despite the context it may be written in. Part of this project is to communicate the idea that a tool as powerful as storytelling can be even stronger through music and performance. This piece takes all of these learning elements and varying themes to produce a "classic" piece of musical theater that anyone can enjoy!

Room Usage Guidelines
The operations team spent much of the summer working in most our shared academic spaces (and a few of our supervised studios) to provide additional cleaning and equipment maintenance. With the large number of shared academic spaces in the DFPA it is especially important that we all contribute to their upkeep. To that end, please comply with the following Room Usage Guidelines. These guidelines and standard layouts are posted on the wall in most of our shared academic spaces.
- Use only dry erase markers on the whiteboards.
- Clean up the room, including the whiteboards.
- Place all trash in receptacles, food and drink containers should be put in the main hallway receptacles.
- Do not add/remove furniture or equipment to/from the room without permission. A room inventory is posted in most shared academic spaces.
-
Rearranging furniture and equipment within the room is permissible, but the room should be returned to its standard layout at the end of use. A standard layout is posted in most of our shared academic spaces.
- Room schedules are posted outside most of our shared academic spaces. Please vacate the space in a timely fashion in order for subsequent events to begin on time.
-
If additional furniture and/or equipment is needed in order to facilitate the effective use f this space, or if there are any other concerns, please send an email to DFPAOperations@luc.edu.
-
If a piano is present, do not set anything on the piano; keep liquids away from the piano; and do not unplug the piano from the wall socket.
- Food is not permitted in Music Studios or Practice Rooms.
