Dear Traveler:

It’s April. The weather’s lovely. The forests are abuzz. The waterfalls are teeming. And there is so much to do in Transylvania County that a reasonable person couldn’t hope to get to all of it. Whoever (T.S. Eliot, they tell me) said “April is the cruelest month” was clearly working through “Mountain biking or canoeing on Saturday? And is there any way I could do both?”  And that’s before you even get to the dining, fine art and live music.  A cruel decision, indeed.

But the good news is that this is just the very start of what promises to be an epic season up here. Even if you can’t do it this month, there’s always next month (and wait until you see what the White Squirrels have dreamed up for May). So get out the door and get to work on your adventure. Marvelous times await. No foolin’.

It may sound simple, but writing a truly great song is a tall order. Here’s your chance to hear, and see, some of the greatest songwriters of our time showcase their artistry in the perfectly beautiful setting that is Brevard Music Center. Blue Ridge Adventures has gained a reputation for staging road and mountain bike events in western North Carolina that are known for their well-thought out routes and high quality rider support. The Looking Glass Road Cycling Tour is no exception. Riders have the option of choosing from 50 and 100 mile routes, both of which serve up some of the best scenery the county has to offer. 

This relaxing eight-mile canoe trip begins near the headwaters of the world’s 3rd oldest river, the French Broad, and it’s a delight for paddlers of every age and interest. Check out the budding signs of spring as the current carries you (and your worries) away. No experience necessary and all equipment is provided. All you need to pack is your sense of wonder. 

It’s a party. It’s a camp out. It’s a beer fest. It’s a music happening. It’s a food truck throwdown. It’s all these rolled into one bad (as in good) shindig at Oskar Blues’ chill REEB ranch, just the other side of the Transylvania County line. But what’s a couple of hundred yards when you’re talking about good times and good eats? Here’s your chance to judge the grub from 15 food trucks, soak up some incredible music and tap into OB’s cool brews.

What better way to celebrate the beginning of the weekend than with a casual stroll to some of Brevard’s most iconic studios and galleries, many of them offering free appetizers, wine and live music. The Transylvania Community Arts Council has been sponsoring this event, with support from participating art galleries, retail stores and restaurants, for more than a decade and it just gets better year after year.
