Beaty Nocturnal: Creating Learning and Social Spaces
Thursday, May 17  | 5:00 - 8:30 pm

The Beaty Biodiversity Museum was a welcome recipient of a British Columbia | Canada 150 grant, which was announced in January 2017. Our project, Visitor Experience Improvement Project: Creating Learning and Social Spaces, focused on developing the infrastructure of the museum to upgrade the gallery space. Our project was designed around improving the visitor experience by constructing interactive elements, improving social spaces, and creating mobile workstations for researchers working in the collection.

The work for this project was completed in early 2018 and we are excited to officially unveil all elements to the public. Attend the official unveiling on Thursday, May 17 to learn more about the full scope of improvements completed because of the funding received from the British Columbia | Canada 150 program.

Admission by donation, all ages welcome. Light catering and a cash bar will be available.

Crows are Way Cool because . . .
Sunday, May 6  | 1:00 - 2:00 pm
Crows nest in our street trees, steal food from our beach picnics, and, if we’re lucky, we’ve seen thousands fly eastward like a river in the sky, heading to their winter roost in Burnaby. But did you know that they can remember your face for years, solve puzzles too hard for human toddlers, and know to only use crosswalks when the light is red? Post-doctoral researcher Ben Freeman will take you on a tour of how crows live their life alongside us here in Vancouver and explain why they have evolved so many way cool behaviours.

Intrepid visitors will race across campus and experience the power of STEAM!

Camera "Traps" are Way Cool because . . .
Sunday, June 3  | 1:00 - 2:00 pm
Large-bodied terrestrial mammals are often called “charismatic megafauna” as they capture our attention and inspire our imagination. These animals are also often rare and elusive, making it difficult to assess and manage their populations. Dr. Cole Burton will show you how an exciting research tool, the camera “trap”, is generating Way Cool pictures while helping to improve knowledge of large mammal populations and inform their conservation.
