May's Stellar Scholar: Héctor Andrade!

Why are you pursuing electrical engineering?
What do you love about it?
I decided to study Electrical Engineering because I always liked physics and math and I was especially interested in the way these subjects apply to the real world through technology. I am currently working on reducing the power consumption of data centers which I think is important because, due to the current demand for faster and better internet, the power consumption of data centers continues to increase significantly.

Why did you come to UCSB for this program? The department of Electrical Engineering at UCSB is very renowned, and I looked forward to joining this program because the research conducted here has high impact. I came here from Mexico on a Fulbright Scholarship for my Masters and decided to continue into my PhD.

Do you have any advice for other graduate students? My advice for incoming graduate students is to hang in there: the first couple of years with a full course load are tough, but once you are in the research stage, that effort pays off. I remember my first quarter at UCSB was the hardest, but as I got adjusted to the new environment things got more manageable and enjoyable.

Here's what Héctor's nominator had to say about him: "Since he started his graduate school journey he always faced new challenges and tasks with discipline, positivity and humility. He truly is an inspiration... he is always eager to help and give others advice and support."
Congratulations Héctor!
Nominate someone here for the Scholar Spotlight today -- it's super quick and easy, and you'll make their day!
