June is PTSD Awareness Month
|
What is PTSD?
PTSD, or post-traumatic stress disorder, is a mental health condition that can develop after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event—such as serious injury, violence, or life-threatening situations. It can affect both children and adults, and often causes ongoing stress or anxiety even when no danger is present.
Common Symptoms:
|
- Flashbacks or nightmares
- Avoiding reminders of the trauma
- Negative thoughts or beliefs
- Feeling detached or numb
- Irritability, anger, or being easily startled
- Trouble sleeping or concentrating
- Physical symptoms like headaches or stomachaches
|
Coping Strategies:
Build healthy routines, stay active, practice relaxation, and connect with supportive people. Professional help—like therapy or medication—can make a big difference. The IVC Health and Wellness Center offers appointments with trained therapists who can support you and refer you to doctors if needed.
