Elevator No. 7 Will Be Offline For Some Time: Critical Maintenance Updates
The critical maintenance project to upgrade certain infrastructure systems in Smith is still going strong.
With most of the work is accomplished, the biggest impact this term will come with the closure of Elevator No. 7 in the central corridor across from the food court. This system is getting a much needed update, but the project is several months behind schedule. Check the posted information outside the elevators for more about accessing the sub-basement and loading dock during this time.
And, if you are able, please use the stairs to reduce trips on Elevator No. 6, which is now upgraded. It can benefit others.
At this writing, No. 7 is still operating but going offline any day.
We are happy to report that the heating, air conditioning and ventilation upgrades are completed and the University is finalizing its interaction with the new control systems. All areas of the building have moving air again, temperature control is promised soon.
The new roof of Smith is past 90 percent complete and work should be finished in the next couple of weeks. At that time, the chute and dumpster on the south side of the building will be removed from the breezeway. The new roof will reduce leaks in the upper floors and help insulate the entire building.
Some of the unexpected silver linings from the critical maintenance work include:
- The corridor in the northeast portion of the basement and the Quiet Prayer and Mediation Lounge now has LED lights.
- A great deal of hazardous material located in the mechanical work areas of the student union was removed.
- The new elevators have voice announcements for those who need assistance — and the rest of us who don’t look up from our phones before getting off.
This long overdue upgrade of some of our heating, air conditioning and ventilation systems (HVAC); five elevators and roof is primarily supported by an $8.1 million bond and $2.8 million in additional funding approved by the Student Fee Committee. We thank ASPSU and the SFC for their continuing support. The Smith building reserve and PSU funding sources contributed the remainder.
We appreciate everyone’s extended patience with this work.
