Who knows the future? I went to a beautiful wedding this weekend for two young adults whom I greatly love. At their rehearsal dinner, their friends rose to speak on their behalf. They were so funny that before I knew it, I was laughing, loudly. Apparently my laughter was so loud that others around started to stare. Perhaps they had never seen me laugh like that before.
In our text, when Sarah heard the Lord say she would give birth to a child in her old age, she laughed. And God called her out on it. Sarah denied it, but God persisted, “No, you did laugh.” And then God’s word came true and she and Abraham named their son Isaac which means, “laughter.”
A few years ago, Emily, a great friend of the bride this weekend had heard that Peter and Kathryn were going to attend the same graduate school and said before they even saw each other, “You two are going to get married and I’m going to tell this story at your rehearsal dinner.” Sure enough they met and fell in love and the friend who had made the prediction kept her promise and told the story at the rehearsal dinner. It was beautiful, poignant, and powerful. And we laughed because we knew that God had done something great for this couple, and all of us had a front row seat to his glory revealed in them. What if God is laughing with us with great joy! He knows the future and he always has the last laugh. And it is good.
