It's All Jazz:
The Roberto Voerzio Legendary Trio
This now cult status winery was established in 1986, when a young Roberto Voerzio decided to leave the family business to make wine on his own, with the support of his wife Pinuccia. The estate began with just two hectares (5 acres), but years of patient and diligent negotiations were rewarded with the acquisition of some of the most prestigious and historic crus in La Morra for the production of Barolo as well as excellent vineyards for varieties such as Dolcetto, Barbera, and Nebbiolo.
At Roberto Voerzio, an almost fanatical attention and dedication is lavished on each and every vineyard, vine and cluster. High density planting (6,000/8000 vines per hectare), short winter pruning (leaving just 6-8 buds per plant), a green harvest in mid-July (reducing the bunches by more than 50%) and a second thinning-out in mid-August (during which each cluster is reduced in size by cutting off the bottom part and leaving just the full, more concentrated upper section) translate into drastically reduced yields, at little as 500 g per plant for the most prestigious vineyards.
Roberto Voerzio’s viticultural philosophy is simple: work the vineyards with the utmost respect. No chemical fertilizers, weed-killers, fungicides or other substances are utilized. Weeds between vineyard rows are removed manually and each individual vine is fertilized by hand using cow manure or humus, depending on the specific needs of the plant.
A non-interventionalist philosophy is applied in the cellar as well where fermentation takes place naturally in stainless steel tanks. After the malolactic fermentation is complete (also in stainless steel), all the wines except Dolcetto are aged in wood, using a combination of large oak casks and small French oak barrels. Nothing is added and the wines are not filtered.
This meticulous approach both in the vineyards and cellar has granted Roberto Voerzio countless accolades and admiration from wine enthusiasts around the world, each bottle a masterpiece of authenticity.
Today Renegade is excited to announce three new releases from this legendary estate.
We begin with the 2021 Dolcetto d'Alba Priavino ($36.50)
(Priavino being the name of the vineyard). Ruby red color, with aromas of red fruits and flowers. This is wonderfully juicy, with unexpected depth and refinement. A Dolcetto that raises the bar and then some.
The second wine is Voerzio's
2020 Langhe Nebbiolo Disanfrancesco ($55).
We call this one baby Barolo grown in the La Morra vineyard, adjacent to the Brunate vineyard. La Morra faces Southeast, and is one with the highest elevation of Voerzio's vineyards (450m).
Aromatic and pure with notes of black cherry, wildflowers, pepper, then darker red berry fruits emerge with all the finesse and elegance one would expect.
The final wine in our trio is the beautiful
2020 Barbera d'Alba Il Cerreto ($55).
We might go as far as saying this is a spiritual Barbera; a wine of great complexity and intensity. Blackberry, red berry, spicy hints and a trace of minerality rolling throughout. Soft and lucious with intense acidity. A very complex finish, with excellent length; we are taking minutes and minutes. Please decant for a few hours before enjoying.
These are small production wines (Dolcetto topping out at 2,000 cases). And when we speak to quality they exceed their pricepoint. You could shell out a few C-Notes for a Voerzio Barolo and for a Barolo enthusiast it is a monumental experience.
But let's begin here with these 3 wines, each one a conversation starter.
We've bundled this trio of magical wines into a 3-Pack with very friendly pricing:
$125 for the three
(usually $146.50)
