Acts 2:5-13
5 Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. 6 When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken. 7 Utterly amazed, they asked: “Aren’t all these who are speaking Galileans? 8 Then how is it that each of us hears them in our native language? 9 Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia,[a] 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome 11 (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs—we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!” 12 Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, “What does this mean?” 13 Some, however, made fun of them and said, “They have had too much wine.”

New International Version (NIV)
“I know our God is an ‘on-time’ God,” exclaimed the lady driving the bus to bring me to church one morning.  Do you believe that?  I do!  Toby Mac says, “He’s never early.  He’s never late.  Help is on the way.”

The arrival of the Holy Spirit coincided with Pentecost and the ancient Feast of Weeks.  This meant Jews from all over the ancient world had gathered in the city.  The Spirit, like a wind, like fire descended on the believers enabling them to speak other languages.  So, these devout God-fearing Jews heard “the wonders of God” in their own languages.

Some in the crowd were curious and others were cynical, suggesting the disciples were drunk.  They were right about one thing.  These Christ-followers were under the influence.  They were “God-intoxicated,” as Count Von Zinzendorf would later describe the Moravian Brethren.  What would it be like to be filled with and controlled by the Spirit who is Holy?

It is not too late for us.  Our on-time God already knows what he is about to do.  He is not on our schedule, but we should strive diligently to be on his.  When he fills us again and again with his Holy Spirit, we will live our whole lives under his influence and others will notice.  Some will be amazed and others skeptical.  But they will know something has happened.  We should be ready to give a reason for the powerful hope within us.  All heaven could break loose at any timen God, we can never lose.

Pray with me:
Father, bring us under your influence.  By your own eternal Spirit rule in all our hearts alone.  Get us on your schedule and keep us there.  Since we live by your Spirit, let us keep in step with your Spirit.  Give us the grace to see and speak your wonders today.  In Jesus’ name. Amen.
We begin the new year of 2024 with great anticipation.  Our Monday through Friday devotionals will start in the book of Acts this year.  We will not hurry through the book.  We want to see what the Holy Spirit did in the early church so that we may discern what he is doing in us and through us.  Join us for these devotionals as we learn together about our King and his Kingdom in the world.

We also invite you to join us as we read through the Bible. Copies of the reading plan are available at Tallowood Baptist Church, or download your copy here:
