Acts 17:1-4
When Paul and his companions had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where there was a Jewish synagogue. 2 As was his custom, Paul went into the synagogue, and on three Sabbath days he reasoned with them from the Scriptures, 3 explaining and proving that the Messiah had to suffer and rise from the dead. “This Jesus I am proclaiming to you is the Messiah,” he said. 4 Some of the Jews were persuaded and joined Paul and Silas, as did a large number of God-fearing Greeks and quite a few prominent women.

New International Version (NIV)
Why did God make us and then save us? Are we here to make money, or find happiness, or become famous? What is our mission? I only ask because I am convinced that God is on a mission. Christopher Wright has written an excellent book called The Mission of God. God wants to redeem fallen mankind through the death of Jesus Christ, the Son. Jesus inaugurated his kingdom when he came to the earth, died on the cross, and rose again. Every church is an embassy. Every Christian is an ambassador.

Luke shows us Paul’s plan for sharing the good news of King Jesus. When he arrived in Thessalonica, he went first to the synagogue. For three consecutive Saturdays he reasoned from the scriptures (our Old Testament). He explained that the Messiah had to suffer and rise from the dead. “Jesus is the Messiah,” he preached. Not only did a number of Jews believe, but God-fearing Greeks, including a number of prominent women also chose Christ.

God’s mission is still our mission. Paul would later write to the Corinthians, “For Christ’s love compels us because we are convinced that one died for all . . . that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and rose again” (2 Corinthians 5:14-15). And again, “We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf:  be reconciled to God” (2 Corinthians 5:20). With whom can you share this good news today?

Pray with me:
Father, thank you for the divine appointments you have set for us. Please help us to keep those appointments. Give us the grace to share the good news with someone today. Help us to preach the gospel to ourselves and others. Thank you for reconciling us to yourself and giving us the ministry of reconciliation. Expand your kingdom through your people today. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
Our Monday through Friday devotionals will start in the book of Acts this year.  We will not hurry through the book.  We want to see what the Holy Spirit did in the early church so that we may discern what he is doing in us and through us.  Join us for these devotionals as we learn together about our King and his Kingdom in the world.

We also invite you to join us as we read through the Bible. Copies of the reading plan are available at Tallowood Baptist Church, or download your copy here:
